Default Newbish Tuning ?s about current setup

Hey guys, well some of you know that I havent been real happy with how my car is tuned. Let me give you the basics real quick then get to my probs and questions, hopefully a few of you can point me in the right direction. For over a year, I have had my 2000 ITR with aem cold air, smsp header and exhaust with a resonator and a carsound cat AND STOCK ECU which gives me a CEL code because the o2 sensors for the header had to be extended. And then A couple months after that, got it tuned with a SAFC-II which is currently still in the car today. Ya i know, i dont know why I didn't use a VAFC but i got the safc-ii off my friend for dirt cheap, thought it do the job. Heres the dyno of how it looked and how it is as of today

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1173843

And that seemed 'ok' for a while, but ever since then i feel like its been a downhill ride. Not literally. The car feels great and made good #s but my gas mileage has gone to crap and now this is happening...

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1480250

which i believe is because its running a bit rich, but its jst annoying and gets the car consistantly dirty everytime i drive it (which is 80% highway driving)

Soooooo.....i have been thinking about retuning it in hopes to make a little more power but more importantly get it running 'better.'

I'm a newb when it comes to tuning or i probably woulda done this right in the first place haha.

I have been thinking about upgrading to a Kenji P28 ECU and either getting a VAFC-II or the P28 ecu and hondata s100. I dont really need to be tuning and retuning the car all the time so i think the s300 wouldn't really be in my options. I just want to get the car tuned properly and leave it. My main concern is right now it is only tuned at full throtle on the dyno.

And getting a p28 with a vafc might increse some numbers, but i'm scared this might not even fix anything.

So can a hondata s100 and a p28 together be tuned for partial and full throttle ?? And would this combo do what I need it to and leave me without any headaches in the end??

Basically, since the car has been tuned, its been headache and I want to correct it.

With an upcoming HPDE coming in the near future, I want to get what I need done

SO what do you guys think, i know i might have some observations wrong, this is why i am coming here for help and to make sure I KNOW WHAT I AM GETTING INTO if i deceide to do this

Thank you to all

Not sure how the safc would work on an ITR but I'd imagine that you just don't have VTEC adjustibility. Now that that's out of the way, onto my $0.02.

If your tuner is good then it shouldn't matter what software/hardware you use. Whatever he is most experienced with.

Example: a properly tuned VAFC will perform better than a shitty tune on, say, the Hondata set-up.

No need to spend extra $$$ on a new tuning set-up if your tuner can't tune it.

Like you said, the problem lies within the tune. The safc might not be the best device for the ITR. I only say that because I've never heard of anyone using it.

I went with the s200 because I found one used and my tuner is experienced with Hondata.

If it was me, I'd probably get fpr/gauge, p28 chipped and conversion harness. Then find a good tuner who will tune Crome or Uberdata ( I prefer Crome).

I would suggest something along the lines of the Hondata S100, Chrome or Uberdata. The VAFC works o.k., but for complete tuning of the A/F and timing maps, you need more.

go to phearable.net or contact mtber on ht and get a chrome chipped p-28 from him . i had better results with his prom than with kenji's .... not taking anything away from kenji.. but it's cheap he has them in stock no abnormal wait period and it's like having a new car in ten seconds!

the safc will work just fine, you just can't adjust v-tec points .. i used them both and are wirtually the same thing !

http://www.pgmfi.org

Check out those forums, and see who tunes Crome/Uberdata in your area. I'm sure there are a few, since FL isn't in the middle of the sticks.

Chipped P28 - $120
Conversion harness - $50-$100
Crome/Uberdata - FREE
Street tuning - I paid my tuner in beer and food, I'm sure you can find a hookup
Dyno tuning - not necessary, but generally $75/hr

After 8 hours of street tuning at all partial throttle positions, my mpg back when I was 1.8L was in the low 30's city. FWIW...

pm'd, but replying here as well:

go with an obd1 p28 or p72 (the latter has a knock sensor). then use crome/ uberdata/ neptune - this is a cheaper route since you don't have to pay for the software.

ditch the vafc/ safc as those are crap (i can expound if you like but please take my word for it).

my o2 sensor foolers are plug and play and do get rid of the CEL from running a test pipe.
