I have a 96 Civic CX.
ok so I just put in my D16Y8 engine that's been balanced with 10.5:1 SRP pistons and eagle rods. Head is untouched, using the factory intake and throttle body. I'm still breaking in the engine so I havn't taken it over 3200 RPM's. First 20 minutes ran fine on the lift. After changing the oil and checking everything out I drove it first 5 miles no problems then I heard it start pinging, havn't floored it just half throttle or so. I would imagine that it would still be in closed loop mode but maybe not. Brought it back to the shop and started checking stuff, retarted the distributor don't think it matters on OBDII though. Checked the adj. cam gear still set at 0. Pulled the plugs (new ones) and noticed that theres a powdery white coating on the tops of all 4. I pulled the plugs on the 110K mile D16Y7 and noticed they look the same. I'm still running the Y7 ECU till I can get the wiring for the Y8 ECU. Any thoughts on this would be great.

 

also gonna replace the fuel filter and pump tomorrow, I've got a 255LPH walboro from my CRX laying around.

no CEL's everything seems to be good except the pinging. On the Y7 engine everything was good and no pinging. My roommate without looking at it thought sounded like it was lean. Rich is usually black sooty. This was white almost ashy.

previous setup ran fine, well apparently not as the plugs showed otherwise.

 

Your running to lean so the engine is pinging due to the lack of fuel. I dont know anything about tuning so I dont know how much fuel you need for yoursetup. Free bump for ya.

 

ok so today I replaced the fuel pump with walboro 255lph, filter, fuel rail with OBX high flow, my existing CX regulator. Plugs look a little better now still whitish on top but now black sooty toward the threads. And it still pings. Anybody have any ideas on this I retarded the ignition timing as far as it would go if that even does anything.

 

Maybe get a y8 ecu, or borrow one just to see if they clean up. bump

 

I dont think retarding the timing will help with it being leann but might stop the pinging a bit.

 

I've got an ecu but it's the wiring that I'm not quite ready for. wiring for the knock, vtec solenoid and oil sensor, and the rewiring of the AIC. I don't understand why it would still be lean fuel delivery isn't a problem unless it's in the ecu. And going from a Y7 to a Y8 shouldn't make any difference in fuel demand.
