Default JDM front HID problems, need help

factory HID front end problems.

My bud was driving down the road and his passenger side headlight keeps cutting on and off. If he turns the light off, and turn it back on, the light comes on. When the light is turned on, it doesnt look like it warms up, it stays a blue color. After a min, it turns back off. He has had the front end since the beginning of summer, and this has just started this week. He is running the 20w fuses, as told to.

Any suggestions to this problem. Could it be grounding?

TIA

Bulb is the problem?

Just making sure what the problem may be. Would hate to spend any more money than he has to.

Thanx for the reply. Anyone else with info?

i had the same problem one time, and it would not stay on, it just flickers then turns off. i then went to investigate the problem, checking all the connections, and lastly checking the bulb to fine it had exploded.

The only time I had problems with my HID was when the battery was really low. One wouldn't light, and the other would just flicker. Once I charged the battery it was perfectly fine again. If you check the bulb and it's fine, make sure the connections are good and corrosion free because it might not be getting the power it needs to run them right.

I would say the bulb and/or the ballast. I had an HID kit go out before and this is what it did.

usually when people retrofit, they just put in the + and - to the original harness.
This isn't good because when hot, hids need more juice to turn on and off.
You need to wire in a relay to supplement for the power
I think he just added positive and negative and added no relay which can be causing his **** to go off.
OEM Hids are suppose to last forever, I've never seen an hid bulb go bad, well I only used phillips ones so i really wouldn't know

I agree, though ballast was the first thing that I thought of. It certainly wouldn't hurt to double-check all the wiring, and checking the capsule itself is a relatively simple matter (just swap the left and right capsules and see what the result is).

Ben, if you need a ballast give me a call tomorrow. I've got two ballasts sitting in my garage, neither are the OEM DC2R but they should work. One is an OEM TL and the other is an OEM 350Z. I'd sell one if you need it.

ok need to try and narrow down the problem here. First thing he needs to do is switch out the two bulbs from the left and right side. If the problem continues on the side that was good when he switches the bulbs out then he knows he has a problem with the Bulb its self. After he does this and the problem continues to be the same. Tell him to check his wiring make sure everything is correct, and also properly grounded. After that if everything checks out then hes left with just the ballace, which is his problem and will have to be replaced.

swap the bulb over from left to right (or right ot left)
if the bulbs fine, then swap over the ballast
that should tell ya whether its the bulb or ballast

We had an S2K here at our shop one time do something similar to this. It was simply a loose ground on the chassis harness near the rear of the headlight assembly. Check all your ground connections is my suggestion.....never know when one might have worked loose.

First off I would like to thank Ben for taking time out of his schedule to take my call, listen to my problem, discuss some possibilities with me, and then make a thread to get some other input! Mad props! Next, I would like to thank everyone that posted some input on what the problem could be and some ways to make sure what the problem really was! You guys were very helpful!

Came home today after talking to Ben again and decided that I needed to get to the bottom of this problem. I figured that the easiest thing I could do first would be to test the ballast. So I unhooked both ballast and used female connectors to run a power and ground wire out of the male driver side ballast plug...the plug that had the power and ground for the ballast itself. Ran the ground, turned the lights on, and touched the power to the female plug for the passenger side headlight. And sure as the world, the passenger side headlight came on, warmed up the the color it should be and imediately changed to a pinkish-purple color. About 15-20seconds after that, it started flickering. When the flickering began, it took the bulb about a minute and a half to completely cut off. I tested the passenger side bulb on the driver side ballast about three times and had the same results each time. Also, I checked the passenger side ballast on the driver side bulb and that bulb worked fine showing me that the passenger side ballast was good!

All in all, after reading all the input and taking ideas from what Ben had given me along with you guys, I found out that the passenger side ballast is good but I need to replace the bulb...Looks like I will be making a trip to the Honda or Acura dealership for a new D2S bulb here in the next couple of days...Which brings me to another question...Does anyone happen to know if the S2Ks use a D2S bulb? I believe that the TSX and TL do but I live right down the road from the Honda dealership so I was going to try to save some gas a time and run up there and grab a S2K bulb. If they dont use a D2S bulb but the TSX and TL do, does anyone know the part # for them so I can just go to Honda and order that part number?

Once again I would like to think Bizzle and everyone else that has given me input and ideas on what I need to do in order to get to the bottom of this problem! Thank God for H-T! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Make sure the ballast isn't wet too. Also check thr grounds(I'm not sure how the hook up on JDM front ends)
