Default setting the ignition timing

Ignorant question alert...

When I am facing the engine bay (distributor on left), which direction is advance vs. retard? I'm thinking that if I rotate the distributor "away" from the front of the car, this is timing advance. Is that correct??? Thanks for the help.

push the distributor back toward the firewall to advance it.. opposite to retard..

And since you didn't know which way to turn the distributor, you probably don't know to short the Service Check Connector under the dash before setting the ignition timing....so make sure to do that too.

A Helms manual (for your car and transplanted engine) works wonders here.

Yep, I've got the factory manual. That's why my question was kinda lame . I thought I was going crazy, but as I advanced the timing, low-end was getting worse. But the issue turned out to be ecu related. I'm not crazy after all!
