Default First Turbo Collector (for me)

Here's some pics of my first turbo collector. (although it was my second attempt) I had to make a few changes to my jigs, but now these should be easily reproduceable for me later on.

Cutting was done with a 6.5" x 10" Grizzly bandsaw with bi-metal blade.
Welding was done with a Lincoln PT185, 1/16" 2% tungsten, 125amps, 25cfm gasflow with a #8 cup on a gas lens. Piping is sch10.

I plan on going over the welds again with 3/32" tungsten and back purging once the rest of the manifold I'm making is farther along. The edge was lightly beveled on a sander, but I plan to take it farther with the next collector I do. I will also clean up the inside of the collector once the manifold is done as well. I left it as is for the pics to show the actual fitment.

just because it is discolored does not mean it has been penetrated.

Hahahaha. This could get dirty really fast.

Looks good though. It's tough to weld down inside the middle of it.

For the penetration questions, there's two reasons for that. One, I should have been using a thicker tungsten and didn't feel comfortable with as many as many amps I was running through the 1/16 tungsten. It may have been fine, but I just had that thought in the back of my head thinking I heard/read it somewhere.
The second reason is I wasn't backpurging the collector at the time. I'd rather have only a tiny amount of crystalization on it than a lot. I also plan on going back over it (as mentioned above) with more heat and back purging so I can get fuller penetration. I don't want all that contaminated metal being sucked back up into the puddle later.

Looks good. I wouldn't worry about the amperage. I run 150amps through a 1/16 tungsten on a daily basis.

Best regards,

If you get good enough penetration, there is no need to.

if you purge the inside and weld it with one pass...you'll find that you will loose the "sharpness" of the collector. I'd rather weld it in two passes. One outside like he did and then one inside.(with much less heat)

After cutting on the bandsaw, I did take the inner edge faces to a 12" disc sander to smooth them out a little more. Then I sprayed them down with 2+2 carb cleaner to get most of the cutting fluid out, and wiped them down in a final pass with acetone.
