Default Ball Joint Seperator

Are they universal? I have a Ebay gift certificate and figured I'd pick one up due to the fact that I'll be working on my suspension in the near future and I know I'll need one. Also any other specialty tools that come in hand? I can't think of any right now.

the best way to separate a balljoint is with a sledgehammer or a good hammer hitting the spindle just above the balljoint. Separators break the boots and you end up hammering everything anyways. just make sure to thread the nut halfway to avoid hitting the threads.

Hitting the LCA with a large hammer (perpendicular to the ball joint axis) works well. Failing that, search around and find the post detailing the use of a Craftsman 1/2" drive ratchet handle - great trick.

The only time you'll need a separator is when you're working on a lift or have to separate the upper ball joint.

I get by without a separator for the upper ball joint. I use the separator fork and replace the boot.

Another alternative is to get a job at a Honda or Acura dealership. Our's has a public-use tool for all of the mechanics to use as needed.

I second that .

I'd never use any seperator tool, or even think about pounding on anything with a hammer. That's asking to rip a boot.

The ratchet trick is so easy. I really don't understand why everyone doesn't use it?

This method has NEVER failed me and I work at the dealer. No need for a special tool, I just hammer the LCA below the balljt.

Why beat on something with a hammer when you can do it just as efficiently without any force?
