Crown nut will not go onto ball joint.
Hey guys i'm trying to put the crown nut back onto the lower ball joint but the threads seem to be smooshed on one side. ANyway when I try to screw it on, the ball joint just spins around. I can't get it to hold still so I can put the nut on all the way.
I was thinking about getting a new ball joint today but doesn't the threads on the joint have to be good in order for the ball joint remover to pull it out?
anyway, any tips would be great, thanks.

i use an air chisel to remove and install ball joints, i know i know HACKER but it works. to keep the joint from spinning, try installing the ball joint in the hole then put a floor jack under the control arm and jack it up a little. seating the taper on the ball joint. that may give you enough resistence to thread the nut down. aside from replacing it thats the only way i know to help you out.

I had the same problem yesterday I used a hammer to seperate the spindle and smashed the threads. I just took a pair aor vise grips on the balljoint , the metal part, and tok a die and re-threaded the threads. On the crown nut I used a tap and cleaned those threads, used lots of WD-40 and an impact to tighten that sucker back on there.

The threads don't have to be good to get the balljoint out. The big problem is that you need to remove the axle from the knuckle to get the balljoint out. If the balljoint stud is mushroomed, it's best to just replace the thing. But if it's just slightly damaged threads, get a die & re-cut them.

I read through this link, and it sounds like some people got a few things backwards. If you put the wheel on & lower the vehicle, it won't further seat the lower balljoint in the LCA, it will separate it. I don't know how they came up with that one.
I have heard of people putting the wheel on while the jack supports the LCA, so they could stand on it and put extra pressure down into the balljoint (instead of just pushing down on the brake rotor).

Re: (94eg!)
for 94eg cause he helped me out when i had problems with my lower ball joint.
well i was about to rethread the ball joint but i didnt find a way to stop it from spinning. so i bought a new ball joint for 24.99 from autozone and took the whole hub off and took it to pepboys to get the old ball joint pressed out and pressed in for 36.00 after taxes
you could save that 36 bucks if you rent the ball joint removal tool from autozone. though its gonna cost $100 bucks but you get that money back when you return the tool
