Default Hunting steering rack

I can't find 'em on Autozone, and Majestic is asking about 400 +shipping. That doesn't include tie rod ends, it's just (pretty much) the rack, pinion, shafts, and seals/screws involved.

I'd prefer not to go salvage on it.

Anyone know of a good place to get a refurb or new one for good pricing?

you know, theres really only 2 servicable parts on the steering rack. the pinion bearing and the rack end bushing. less than $15 in parts. other than that, its just replace the boots and inner tie rods if needed and adjust the gearbox.

So this means I can get away for like 20$ plus my blood all over it? (somehow, I always manage at least ONE cut) ??

btw, this is just the NON powered steering rack.

majestic doesnt even sell rebuilt non powered steering racks. probably because it only requires 2 replaceable parts.

Then I need to recheck my research, but I though Majestic offered the non PS rack at 385 or whatnot.

I'll check up on those parts, hopefully that's all it is.

Basically, if my car's lifted, and I grab the wheel, I can feel alot of play. Also with the car on the ground stopped, I can turn the wheel approximately an inch, MAYBE two, and I get vibrations under braking...all sound about right?

havent we gone over this before?

its all the symptoms of a worn out rack end bushing.

also check your tie rods and balljoints, and *cough* lock nuts.....

We've gone over the same symptoms, but with braking solutions in mind.

So 1 rack end bushing...that's all I need I think. I wouldn't think the bearing would go. Balljoints I'll check while under there, but I recall them being loose, but not yet gone.

any bit of looseness = gone.

come on, your car is 15-18 years old, almost legal! that suspension stuff needs replacement.
