Torn CV Boot, pretty easy DIY?
I noticed the cv boot on the passenger side in my 98 Integra was seperated/torn somehow, its leaking a little bit of axel grease. Was curious how easy of a DIY this is, and would it be better to get a new axel or can the boots be easily replaced?

The boot can be replaced, but a a lot of member will tell u to just replace the axle. Its only 60 at autozone, and it would involve the exact same process as changing the boot, so u might as well change the axle. Its not too hard, if u search, there shoudl be plenty of DIY axle threads
changing the cv boot itself is really pretty simple (you will need a special tool to crimp the straps down holding on the boot) . What takes most the time is removing the axle. By the looks of that picture it seems that its the inner joint which is going into the tranny. For this you will also have to drain the tranny fluid.
First step would be to see if you can crack the axle nut loose sence this seems to be a big problem for most. after that its fraily easy

they make a replacement boot that is able to be put on without removing the axle. i read about it on team integra and i plan on doing it to my drivers side axle soon. local auto parts stores carry them. you cut off the old boot and this wraps around the axle and is a direct replacement for the cv boot.

I cant speak for those exact axles but on most cv joints you can replace the boot by removing it from the car and taking the crimped brace holding the boot on I usually cut them off. pull the boot down to where the joint is and theres a snap ring there....its pretty self explanatory you removed the ring on one side....push the joint down to make room for the other snap ring and take it off....hte joint slides off the axle shaft then and you can remove the boot.....install is reverse of removal......u need a special pair of pliers for the new metal braces to go over the enw boots.....remember to give it plenty of grease when reinstalling the new boot.
Replacing the whole axle is easier on my cars its what ive always done....as stated with the core of your old axle its fairly inexpensive....although somtimes remanned axles bind and click as ive experienced it takes somtimes the 2nd try to get a good remanned axle.
I wouldnt recomend the two peice boots that slide on without removing the axle...just from my experience they are okay for a quick fix but not reliable in the long run.
theres a post on replacing axles in the 92-95 civic forum under diy thread i believe if its still there..... heres the link https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=382416
Also::: Im not really sure why everyone drains there transaxle fluid Ive done A MILLION axle jobs (im a trans tech) and I never drain it unless it is needed to be drained for somthing else....if the tranny gets lopsided yes some fluid will spill out but if its lifted at and even height or on a lift ....you shouldnt lose any fluid....if so it will be like a spoon full not much to worryabout.....just my opinion though

split boots suck *****. might as well just leave ur torn one on. Taking the axle out isn't that bad. I would prolly replace the whole thing too. If you have a good working axle then it might not be worth it to you to chance getting a bum reman. I had good luck with mine tho.
