Default 97' is getting old......Small tranny leak question

Well, since all of the modifications have been covered in this forum, its time to start talking about older car issues My 97 is going on 9 yrs old and is daily driven but only has 89,000 miles. This weekend, when changing the oil, I noticed just a bit of transmission fluid on the bottom of the transmision bell housing on the flat spot right next to the block. Anyway, the fluid level felt fine, its definitely not leaking much as there is never a spot under the car where I park. The fluid is definitely just slowly seaping out. WHat could this be?? I'm going to check it out more in depth later, but I would suspect rear main seal maybe?? Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Larkin

The rear main seal will leak oil, not tranny fluid.

hmmm.........At least I thought it was transmission fluid. It surely smelled like it. Almost looks like my transmission is sweating a bit.

This picture shows the area that is leaking (of course the car in the picture is not leaking, just imagine that area to be damp). Its the best I can do here at work. I may snap some actual pictures this week.

It may just be time for a good old fashioned rebuild.

If thats the case, she'll have to wait for spring so that I can afford to put in a new Final drive while I'm at it I was hoping to not have to do that for a long time though dammit! Still shifts like Butta......damn leaks

Once it warms up around here I'll inspect it a bit more. Right now there's snow on the ground and 20 Degrees out. I would have checked it out more when I changed the oil but I had only a certain amount of time and I had to do Pads and rotors on all 4 corners as well as flush my brake fluid. I swear everytime I do general maintenance on the R she asks for more.

Prolly just needs some new gaskets.
They have no doubt hardened over time
Luckily these are easy fixes.
Just lame ones.
Breakage=upgrades

Well, maybe upgrade $$ for this year is going to that fix rather than the suspension where I wanted it to go

It could also be the axle seals - fluid will drip down there as well.

The seals are cheap, but buy 2 of each (they are different on driver/pass side axles) if you replace them.... guaranteed to trash one on each side installing them. Just a pain in the ***, even with the "correct" seal driver.

check the boots too.. if those break or crack a bit they will leask as well... those are further away from your problem area and are likely not causing the issues.. but Ive seen some wierd stuff belive me.

I think they are a PITA to install. Easy concept, but I can never get them in perfect without ******* atleast two up. I have a drawer filled with those damn things.
