Default Now, Rod Bearing clearence.

Got my mains in and everything is good for them now. Now for my rod bearing clearence. All my rods came out to be to tight, they are all coming in at under a thou in clearence. Just a smidge under. Im using all ACLs. Now, the manual calls for .0008 to .0017 I believe. So Im guessing they are falling on the very tight side of the Honda spec. I know this isnt going to be a LS motor in the least so I was shootin for .002 thou in clearence. I have both GSR ACLs and LS ACL bearings. I went to give the GSR bearings a shot but they dont have the hole in them that matches up with the hole in the rod cap for oiling. Didnt know if that would effect something.

Questions.....
1- I was thinking of gettin the ACL race bearings for my rod bearings since they are 1 thou thinner and that will give me my clearence of .0017-.002. But I went to the Golden Eagle site and they just sell the race mains. And its not like I can just crack the Honda bearing code cuz the rods that Im using didnt come with this crank.

2- What bearings do you guys use on your LS rods for a LSV? Just wondering.

3- If Im going to get Honda bearings, what color would bring me to my desired clearence of roughly .002 thou? Isnt the difference in colors like .0003 in thickness? So I would be looking into gettin Pinks possibly?

Thanks for the help

Matt

I would definatly get the HX race ACLs. Tuners Choice always has all the ACL bearings in stock. If your clearance with the standard ACLs was 0.0007 to 0.0009 then with the HX you should be at 0.0017 to 0.0019. Some people thinks thats too loose, but some of my rods are 0.0017 and it runs great with great oil pressure. I love the ACL race bearings.

As you allready have the bearings, select the ones you are going to use. Mark the clearences, take the rods to a good shop and have them hone the big ends. + .005,.008.001 what ever you want, that will get you the proper clearance. You should have allready had the big end honed unless these are "new" rods.

Yes, the crank was machined as well as the big end of the rods. I didnt even think of having the big ends bored out. I even read about someone would rather do this than changing out bearings to get the correct clearence.

What do you think about my choice between the GSR and LS bearings? Am I better off with just the LS since all ACLs are tri-metal?

Oh, Im measuring with plasta-gauge....and when I go to take off the rod cap, I have to tap on the rod bolts to free the cap. Yes I have to, it is a very tight fit with the ARP bolts. I was thinking this could of messed with the plasta-gauge reading. But after every single clearence came out to be the same, so I sorta ruled that out.

Think me tappin on the rod bolts could mess with my readings?

I went out and bought a mic. How do I go about measuring the clearence with that?

Crank dia
Rod cap dia
bearing thickness? Do some adding and some subtracting in there.

Thanks for the help guys

Tapping on them should be fine as long as you don't damage the threads. To measure the big end of the rod you will need a Dial Bore gauge that reads down to .0001.

Here is my advice...By a Rod bolt stretch gauge and a New set of ARP Rod bolts for final assembly. The 40.00 is well worht the peice of mind IMO.

Yeah, you would need an inside mic. or a dial bore gauge, snap gauges are NOT accurate down to clearances to build a motor.
