Well, I just went to the GM dealer and got 2 quarts of #12377916 fluid ($12 a quart). I know Pepboys has Pennzoil Synchromesh, but I don't know if it's the one you want (semisynthetic with the friction modifier)

Would the Pennzoil Synchromesh outperform normal Honda MTF? I have a '92 with 150k and it's a little reluctant in shifting... As I read about the Pennzoil stuff, though, they only mention that it's suitable for GM and Chrysler applications. Some reason they wouldn't mention Honda?

well, i had a lil prob shifting into first when barely rolling... it would grind every once and a while... no one at any of the auto parts stores knew what pennzoil synchromesh was, and i couldnt find it, so i ended up goin with honda MTF.. shifts much smoother, and i think the grind might be gone... ill find out tomorrow tho..

One thing I can say from experience is that Honda MTF works WORLDS better than modern 10-W30 motor oil!

My not-too-technical understanding of it is that even though the owner's manual calls for regular 10-W30 motor oil in the transmission (which worked fine 13 years ago) apparently modern grade 10-W30 oil is formulated differently. It still works in the engine, but isn't appropriate for the transmission anymore, so Honda MTF should be used instead.

I changed my tranny fluid according to the owner's manual (10-W30), noticed that it shifted HORRIBLY, read up on it and found out about MTF, swapped it out for Honda MTF, and it was much smoother again.

Still a little reluctant though, so I'd be interested if there's an even better alternative to Honda MTF.
