Default Timing belt broke

well the title pretty much sums up the situation. I was told that when the timing belts break that honda motors are notorious for bending valve stems or something like that. Is that true and what are some ways to check?

no that were on this topic, can you ever really be safe from a belt breaking. I mean couldn't it just snap. And isnt the replacement time like 30000 miles or something

i have heard that when the belt snaps it can bend valves. Pull the head and check or have a machanic do it.

the more miles the more likely it is to break. I havent heard of it happening before like 60,000 miles but who knows. Recomended change is like 60,000 to 90,000 or something. Def not 30,000.

i don't see how snapping your belt would NOT bend valves. some of them are going to be open, and with no timing belt, they are going to stay open, even when the pistons come up. so i wouldn't count on not having bent valves. the good part is replacement valves are not all that expensive, do it yourself, it isn't that hard. but i'd replace the valve seals too.

follow maintenance guide and this kind of thing is easily avoided. Now pull the head off and access the damage. $30 belt vs. poss. valves, head gasket etc.

Because as stated before, some engines are non interference engines meaning there is enough space in the combustion chamber for the crank to completely rotate with no belt and there be no valve interference.

Post which engine you have, you may in fact be lucky and not require anything mroe than a new timing belt and you will be back on the road.

why pull the head...throw a new belt on! If it starts up and sound good you're golden! If it dosn't what are you gonna do bend the valve more? You're gonna need a new belt so your not wasting money! I worked on a 88 or 89 four door civic and we just threw a belt on it after it broke it on the freeway and it started up just fine!! Give that a shot!

I agree totally. I have worked on cars that have come into my shop with broken timing belts and sometimes the car is just fine after replacing the belt.

all honda motors are interference last time i checked which means the chanced of you having bent valves and possibly a warped head are quite high.

I would just buy a new head considering it is a d-series they go for like $50.

Good luck with everything
