engine swap/Smog Question
Hi I know my fair share about cars, but not to much about the engine swapping part (atleast whats legal). i was wondering would a car pass smog if there was a B16a USDM in an EG? Or even any other USDM motor. Thank you.
you can swap a b16 and get it reffed, you will get the bar sticker. i have a b18b in my EG and have a bar sticker. the process takes under 1 hour and $98.25. make sure you have a cat, all the smog equipment, aftermarket equipment must have CARB EO numbers, your engine is the same emissions classification (CA/FED), your ECU is USDM, no air fuel ratio gauge ( i found this out when i got reffed), the year of the engine is the same year as your car or newer, and all OBD equipment for the engine or the car is present. it may be hard to find yourself a OBD1 B16 that is USDM, I don't think there are many Del Sol packages out there. You are better off trying to get a B18B or B18C in the EG... if you switch to OBD2 using a 99-00 SI ECU, you will have to wire in the diagnostic port. you can always call the BAR and ask questions or go on the website. if you already did the swap, take it to the ref and have him run it. if it fails, he will give you back a piece of paper and tell you exactly what you need to fix in order for it to pass. just to let you know, you might want to pretest the car before you take it to the ref...
If you want some help checking out your car to see if it will pass the BAR, let me know. I used to work at a Honda independant shop that did smog testing, so I have access to the Mitchell books that the BAR ref will be using.
