Question on how to O-Ring exhaust flange
A friend has asked me to make some flanges for him for a custom project. Not a problem since we run waterjets, but the flanges he needs have a groove in them for an O Ring.
This is one of the flanges we need to make, notice the groove around the pipe for the O Ring.

Does anyone know how flange makers get that groove in there? I can probably take it to a local machine shop, but I'm wondering if that is the standard method, or if there is another way.

I'm sure they're all machined in there. I know i've had some done and that's how they were done. Another option is to make a gasket or use the orange high temp gasket maker to seal it.
Thanks, that's what I thought. I'll see if I can convince him of the gasket, he was against it because he thought it would leak.
If the pipes aren't before a turbo (like the up-pipe on the WRX's, etc...) and doesn't have to hold tremendous amounts of pressure, the gasket maker stuff will work out no problem.
I have a couple of flanges that are pre-turbo on one of my cars. I do have to reseal some of the exhaust connections every now and then, and I am actually thinking of going with the O-ringing.
