how to recognize bad valve seals
easiest way to tell id get a leak down and compression test done. normally if your valve seal were gone your would have smoke on start up and idle, but not while moving. they arent too hard to replace, just time consuming. on ls engines you can replace them with the head still on, but on gsr's i do believe you need to remove the head. when i replaced mine in my ls engine i removed it anyway...saved me the headache if i accidentally dropped a valve in.
Why wouldnt you be able to on a GSR? You just need a bridge type spring compressor. Its pretty easy esp if you have a air compressor to pressurize the cylinder. Did it twice on a GSR. Not too bad just time consuming.

iuno i was going on what the manual said, because ive never done that on a gsr. i think its due to the rackers no being able to be removed

Manual? Which one said that?
It's just a little harder because they are more recessed. Like i said bridge type all the way. You cant just use one you can find in Autozone. You either gotta get a snap-on one or make one.

i think my helms, im not sure, i know that it can be done...i just prefer to take the head off, so if i do drop a valve the heads already off

better to have the head off. if a valve turns a bit it won't seal right in a high-mileage head. ask how i know
. just take it off to begin with unless you have low miles and great leakdown numbers, and have new valve seats and faces cut while it's off. small price for good stuff.
