Default LS/VTEC build questions

im getting close to putting on my VTEC head, but, i have some quick questions about this build before i begin.................

1). i have a set of B16 head bolts. i was told NOT to use them because they will not be able to torque the head all the way down. can anyone give me some advice on wat to do????

2). the head i have has been milled .040 and i was told it will change the cam timing. do i need to get adj. cam gears to adjust the timing?? also, i retard the timing?? lemme kno on this one.

3). also, when i buy the cam gears, do i buy them for the head im using (B16a) or for the original motor (b18b)? i will be using the LS timing belt.

1>You need to use GSR/TYPE R head studs (ARP, AEBS, etc).

2>When you mill the head, timing can change a little. Any aftermarket BVTEC (TYPE R, GSR, B16) cam gear will work.

3>If you do not have a head gasket yet, a 93 LS headgasket works great! Just buy some LS/VTEC dowls and use a dremel like tool to open up the headgasket.

Good luck!

Timing belt choice depends upon water pump choice.

If you're using an LS water pump, run the LS timing belt.

If you use a GSR/ITR water pump, use a GSR/ITR timing belt.

The GSR/ITR water pump is HUGE. The actual gear is physically large.

I can't remember off hand how many teeth there are on each, though...

The ls water pump flows more than the gsr/type r i think
Dont worry about the cam gears you dont need them its not worth the money unless u have aftermarket cams

shattered dreams you are really wrong about ls pump is much greater.
gsr/type r pump is the best way to go when you doing a b18 or b20 vtec swap . and could tune your stock cams with aftermarket cam gears. he should get them if he really needs to. the gsr/type r pump has a greater velocity then the ls and the b20. and ya arp bolts will stop your worries. o and get the the same timing belt as the same head your using. it has the same teeth as the cam gears and the pump needs.

Head has nothing to do with timing belt, my friend.

I'm using a GSR timing belt with a B16 head on my LSVTEC.

Water pump is the ONLY determining factor on timing belt choice.

any vtec swap is good for the timming belt meaning you did right . i was saying you cant put a ls timming belt on a vtec swap cause it doesnt have anough teeth on them. so if your running a type of vtec head then you should us that pump. and just to thro this comment in umm.. b16 pumps do not have the same velocity as the gsr/type r pumps.

...Uh, no, actually.

The water pump is the ONLY determining factor, as I stated before.

You mentioned about adding 'VTEC swap' to the LS block, and using a VTEC timing belt.

Adding a VTEC head doesn't mean you need a VTEC timing belt.

If you were to do an LSVTEC with LS block and a GSR head, if you still are using the LS water pump, you would use the LS timing belt.

the part where your talking about the ls pump and wat not. is wat im talking about. witch ever pump your using has to match thet timming belt unless its a vtec
but i was told that wich ever vtec swap your using has to match the belt. for an example. if your using a vtec cam gears then you got to match that with the belt, correct? thats wat i was told by honda tuning. i hope i made sence for you to understand wat im talknig about.

Actually, that is incorrect.

VTEC cam gears are the same as LS ones.

Low numbers?

You mean the dyno numbers? That was with stock cams.

If you're talking about the track times, remember, that was at an uphill track in a heavy coupe with full interior and a stereo.
