Car dies until it warms up
When I start my car, it idles fine at 1.5rpm. BUT. If i put it in gear and go anywhere before it is fully warmed up, the engine will stall out at stops or in neutral unless keep the revs up myself. It does this until it gets to operating temp at which point its fine. Sometimes it doesnt stalll but revs REALLY bad, like dips down to 100rpm then back up to 1.5. Which the most common cause of this?
the what you need to do is take off the air filter put your fingers on the botom of two holes which i think from memory is the hvac. If it still sucking after the car starts its getting to much air (to much and killing the car) if so take it off and clean it out. Problem presist come back
Actually it does matter. Knowing what setup within the car is very important when it comes down to diagnosis. Would you have have told him check your eacv/iacv without knowing if he had a MPFI setup? Wouldn’t it suck if he came back and said something like…. I can’t find the eacv/iacv on my carb.
Hey mort…. When you said “Sometimes it doesnt stalll but revs REALLY bad, like dips down to 100rpm then back up to 1.5.” does this occur only when cold and everything is absolutely fine while at normal operating temp?
Off the top of my head I can tell you that if your throttle body checks out (opens / closes properly, gasket’s ok, idle screw is fine, none of the ports within is clogged/blocked), roughly your #1 culprit for stalling WHILE engine warm up will be your idle air control valve #2 other idle controls #3 components within fuel supply or a temp sensor (which I highly doubt, you would have other issues).
In regards to erratic / rough idling while your enging is warming up (fast idle is out of spec; think about the instructions for timing, you should allow your car to reach normal operation temp / idle before performing the job. While warming up your car allows itself to idle a little higher than usual, mine goes up to 750 / 800 and stays there… then drops to 550 on the nose after … during normal idle), #1 culprit is IACV, #2 other idle related components, #3 temp sensor….

one more thing.... do a search for erratic / rough idling and join the many many who has the idle disease!! there's one more thing on the intake that could cause it, but i forgot the name at the moment, maybe when I snap out of my sleepy state it'll cometo me. if you can explain in detail a little better and start to check your parts / eliminate as you go until you come across the problem causer!!

I do
The erratic idle is only when cold and ONLY if i put the car in gear and drive before the car is COMPLETELY warmed up. Same thing with the stalling. If i start it and let it idle it will be fine, but it takes like 5-10minutes for it warm up fully and sometimes i have to get to work, plus it shouldnt stall even if i dont let it warm up. But thanks for all that help i will definately be doing some research.
