Default Differential: Removal and Replacement. Who Has a Guide?

I was quoted over $400 today by my local tranny shop to swap my OEM differential with my OBX LSD. Toooo much for my budget so I wanna try and do it myself. Ive got a spare tranny that has something inside blown that I can do a test run on I guess.

I couldnt find a sinlge bit of info anywhere on a SOHC differential swap. I need a complete guide, I know nothing about transmissions, literally nothing other than the clutch flyshweel and throwout bearing. SO I need a serious step by step walk through and any special tools needed.

Thanks guys

You will need a Helms.

The Helms has the entire proceedure in it.

Follow the directions in the Helms and you will be good.

I just did this proceedure last night. It is pretty easy with the Helms.

Bottom line is you need a helms.

just remember the bolts around the differential are REVERSE thread. youll notice the arrows pointing counter clockwise on the head of the bolts.

Seriously, it's not as hard as some people make it out to be. I had to replace my input shaft bearing about 3 weeks ago. Didn't use a helms, though it makes it easier. There's not a whole lot of parts inside the transmission once the gears are out. Just be very careful when putting the parts back in. Labeling bolts and parts doesn't hurt either. Good luck on it, you'll learn alot.

$400 is a decent price dont forget to shim the case properly, you are also going to need new diff bearings or have a shop press the old ones off the diff i would just buy new ones

Here is a page showing what I did on my "B" motor YS1 transmission.

I don't think the "D" motor transmissions are that much different.

And by the way, if that 400 bucks includes them pulling the transmission out and putting it back in, it's a very fair price!!

Tranny is already out of the car, they need to do no labor other than removal and install of old diff. I wanna do it myself. I will practise on the spare I have. ive got plenty of time to take it slow and easy, just need to do it right. maybe cheaply
