Tranny/Clutch Grinding?

Tranny/Clutch Grinding?
I have a 98 Honda civic DX; I just put in a brand new exedy clutch kit.
NOTE: this is the first time I have run this car since I bought it, and it could be other parts of the tranny or clutch that is causing this problem… so don’t think it’s limited to juts the new clutch.
When I up shift in gears, its smooth. When I seem to downshift to gears 2nd and 1st, it makes this really bad scraping noise.. It’s like the sound when u don’t have any tried left on your break pads and they are scraping on your rotors.
I did not replace my flywheel, b/c the bolts where very hard to get off, and I didn’t want to risk breaking them. I cleaned it good however. Any imput would be awesome!
