Default Help w/ high-mileage 98 civic

Hi guys. I'm new to the board and am looking to buy a civic. It's a 1998 5spd sedan w/ 266,000 km's on the odo (that's 165,000 miles). It's got a price tag of CAD$6000 (USD$5000). The body is in perfect condition and it supposedly runs well (it's about 2.5 hours away so I'm a little shy of checking it out without getting some opinions first). What do you all think?

I just snagged a 96 coupe 5spd about 2 months ago for $2500 cash. It has 260,000 miles and runs supurb. I eventually plan on a motor swap so mileage isn't an issue. I'd offer him $4K for it... best of luck either way...

When someone knows your coming to look at a car they expect you to low ball them at first. Start low and work up. Use the high miles a nice source of bargaining. If you can tell it needs other things, that lowers the price. You have to be ready to walk away. If you think you wont because you drove 2+ hours then I dont know what to say. I dont think I would go unless I saw a shitload of pics and some very detailed info about maitenence records.

The thing is that this car is already set at an extremely low price point. There doesn't seem like that much room for bargaining since CAD$6000 is what I would expect for a cheap 96 civic.

I know its a honda, but it has alot of miles. If you want this as a daily driver then I would be careful. But if you are planning on swapping a motor in there or something then I guess go look at it. Have you seen pics yet?

Doesn't hurt to give a lower offer initially. What's the worst that could happen? If they tell you to F$#k off then look elsewhere.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've decided to pass on the that particular car and am now looking at a 95 ex sedan w/ 125k km's going for $5k. There's also a black lx(?) coupe w/ 195k km's going for $3900 which i'm considering (though I really want the 4 doors).

I know what it is . I may have lived most of my life in Canada, but I haven't forgotten the basics. "polvoronn" is just something I used cuz I use it everywhere. Seriously, almost every msgboard and online service that I have is under the polvoronn name and I also use the same password. Makes it easier to remember

You're right. It IS very fob. hah
