Default Transmission help

I have a CTR transmission that was on a car that was wrecked. My friend said that the gear selector is bent. From messing around with it all I can tell is that it won't go into 1st or 5th.

I was wondering what I could look for which would indicate whether the gears are going to grind.

Here are some pictures. I don't know EXACTLY what's wrong with it, so if you can see anything in the pics let me know. TIA

Should the shift forks have any play in them? Should they be pretty sturdy?

with the outer case 1/2 off, they will wobble a fair amount.........

the shift shaft might be bent, but that would lock you out of the lower gears, 2-4-R.........
