Default fuel smell, driving bomb

i have a 90 crx dx and after filling up yesterday i have a fuel smell inside the car after being parked with the windows up. takes just a minute or two to start smelling. searched the forums and im hoping for a few tips to fix my rolling bomb.

pressure in the tank is strong when you remove the fuel cap. the rubber on the fuel cap is pretty worn out but it is sealing. no gas under the car. I'm tearing apart the back of the car right now to see if I can find an obvious leak. the car has been running rich since in got it a few weeks ago and i was going to time it yesterday to try and fix that when this happened.

the richness is associated with a high idle of 950-1100 rpms. tried to adjust the idle using the service manual thing about the screw didnt solve the problem: car idles low just fine with the EACV removed while tuning idle, after setting to correct rpms the car just returns to higher idle after the ecu is reset. i am thinking its a sensor somewhere, but i need to try timing it first.

smell only appears when the fuel tank is pressurized.

could really use some suggestions as to what to check/replace for this fuel smell. thanks!

i think its a pressure leak whether at the top around the fuel pump or the stamping seal right in the middle all the way around. More than likely the top because you said there was no leaking.

could also be at the front of the car...

Take an afternoon to replace your fuel filter and the injector O-rings too...they're cheap and DIY fixes that could be the problem.

i replaced the fuel cap which had a pretty worn out seal and ill update tonight on it. if this doesnt fix it ill inspect the fuel pump for visible leaking as well as wiggle the fuel injectors to see if they leak... if i cant find anything im going to replace the fuel filter and go from there.

a bad fuel cap wont make the car stink inside with the windows up.

I once overfilled my gas tank at a pump that didnt shut off. A great deal of fuel smell came into the car for a while after that. But it eventually went away.

i was thinking the same thing but it doesnt make much sense to get deep in to things before fixing the most basic and obvious possibilities. will have to see if it stinks today, and yea -- i might have over filled it as well.

at a half of a tank the smell is 100% gone though i am sure it took some time for the smell to leave the interior. It was either the fuel cap or the tank was too full. i'll know next fillup if it was the fuel or not.

thanks for everyones help

Don't mean to hijack a thread or anything, but I am pretty much the same problem, but mine only happens when I make a Left turn ( when all the gas goes to the Right side of the tank) If it happens to be a small leak from rust or anything, What could I use to patch it up, persaying this is the issue. Thanks

there is some stuff that you can buy at autozone ar any car store that is like a clay that is used to patch up gas tanks. my dad used some on his big rig.
