iridium/platinum plugs
what's the story on these plugs? any change in performance or gas mileage as opposed to normal ones? i know they're supposed to be high mileage plugs, you can go longer without changing them but is there anything else they're good for? thanks
Supposedly they give more consistent spark than do standard plugs. I did notice a bit of an improvement in part throttle drivability when I switched to Iridium plugs halfway through tuning my last ITB setup.
imo, they do nothing major other than cost more. if you change your plugs regularly, there's no reason to get the expensive ones. nice copper NGKs are fine.
yes i agree... i've been using NGK Iridiums for the last year and just put some Autolite Platinum's in.. no difference..
id rather change once a year... Iridium too $$$ to do that..

i change plugs all the time in my teg. they cost all of $8, so what the heck? every 10k miles whatever. why not? sometimes when i get bored i change the damn plugs. and anyways, Cu is a better conductor than Ir or Pt, hence it should make a better spark plug where extreme heat and pressure are not involved (read: forced/chemical induction). i myself am forced to use platinum in my turbo motor, so i don't change them often.

Thats weird lol
Anyway stick with copper unless you need the better plugs. I got platinums just cause they last longer

The biggest reason iridium/platinum is used as the electrode material is because of durability. However, the durability in itself is not what is interesting; the durability allows the electrode to be much smaller. Iridium is even more durable than platinum. If you look at the center electrode on the iridium plugs, you will see they are very thin. This reduces the amount of energy need to fire the plug, as well as reducing the quench area (quench area is a surface inside the combustion chamber which cools the combustion, and during ignition, you don't want any quench).
Personally, I have noticed a difference after installing NGK iridium plugs. Most notably, better mpg, and a smoother engine.

No difference here... Alot of money and id rather have new plugs like 5 times then a set of these that last 5x as long. But i already got them so whatever.
