suspension is a good place to start, as well as tires.

drive it stock for a while. work on your skills.

then start modding the car.

I agree, enhance your driving skills while saving some money

Then I would say tires and suspension, maybe new sway bars or something

Work on skills! then get coilovers or springs/adjustable struts, front and rear sway bars, and tie bars. I autocrossed my lude I had Groundcontrol coilovers, Koni Yellow struts, Front upper and rear upper and lower tie bars, Suspension technique front and rear sway bars. IT handled like it was on rails. I loved it. Its especially nice to stiffen up the back more than the front on the shocks, I love oversteer. or is it understeer? hmm well either way theres a good start. If you get sway bars you might want to reinforce the areas where it attaches to the chasis as eventually you will.

First, learn the car. If you need tires, that would be my first mod. My first mod was S-03's and I love them.

I raced in stock class for 2 years just because if I had upgraded one thing and bumped into street prepared, I would have had to upgrade lots of stuff just to be competitive, and I didn't have the money. After I had raced for two years (and won an HS trophy), I wasn't so interested in modding my car anymore. So in my opinion, autox saved me money and taught me how to drive.

tires are important, but learning on some shitty all season rubber bricks will teach you to be much more precise and a better driver for when you do get some good rubber. it's not a bad thing.

for potential a-x'ers out there:
i think the key is, in your first season, to realize that you are never going to win a damn thing. caring about how you finish or being faster than that guy in the chevy celebrity is just going to distract you from what you need to do, which is learning how to drive. i found myself distracted by my ego when i shouldn't have been, finishing in last place against a bunch of people who have been doing this for years--not many people are so naturally talented that they can come in and start winning plastic, and if you aren't doing it, don't get discouraged.

though i don't a/x much anymore, it's important to have this attitude about any performance driving situation. patience and hard work are the only ways to get better in motorsports.

I autoXed for one season. It was ok. It was cool to have a FWD car that oversteered. Not sure if the 4WS did that but it was cool.

I got into tracking. I started out stock too.

so whats the difference between autox and tracking? is autox with cones in a big parking lot or something and tracking is well, on the track?

yup. tracking is also called: open lapping, HPDE, track days, lapping, etc.

a/x also has timing equipment, and 1 car on track (well, not 1, but 1 car per section of track). tracking/lapping/DE'ing has around 20 cars on track at the same time in any given position, no official timing equipment (though you can bring your own) and is NOT a competitive event. Technically, you drive an A/X to win the event, and you drive a track day to improve your driving.
