Default My R died at HOOTERS - updated information

Cliff Notes at the bottom:

Anyway, on thursday I stopped by my friends house from up the street and i shut my car off. About 10 mins later, I came down to move my car and it wouldn't start, just that clicking noise (no motor turning). Damn. Well, about 15 mins later, I go to give it another try and just barely starts.

So, I leave it running so it doesnt die on me again. After a few minutes (we were taking pics) I get in my car to take it back home and I notice my temp. gauge was going everywhere. If I would rev it, it would go past the middle and when I hit the brakes to come to a complete stop, the gauge would max out. So I took it home and parked it and threw on the battery charger and it said the battery was really low. So I charged it over night.

Next day I drive to and from school with no problem starting, although at night, it barely started again so I parked it for the night with no battery charger on.

Today I go in the garage and start it up, started fine. I made a trip to Batteries Plus and had them test it and they said the battery was shot. No promblem, I jsut bought a new battery and it started just fine and my dad and i went to HOOTERS to watch the Notre Dame game and when we came out, car was dead, just clicking. Now I was pissed. So we threw on jumper cables and still nothing. Ended up just push-starting the car cause I wasn't gonna leave it at HOOTERS all day. Now its parked in the garage and im not sure what to do. Here are some possibilities:

1. starter is bad, but why would that cause electrical gauge problems?
2. maybe something with my alarm? i bought the car with an alarm last year and it has never given me problems

any help is apprieciated if more detailed info needs to be provided, let ne know

cliffs: car died at friends, wouldnt turn, battery was shot, got new battery and it died again and im stumped.

it might be the alternator not charging the battery

Might check your main ground and ensure it isn't cut. Poor/cut grounds do strange things to cars (which might explain the temperature gauge). Also might pull the alternator and test it. I know Advance Auto will test it for free. I'm sure others will too.

Check your main grounds - tranny, battery, thermostat

Then check your alternator and make sure it's power cable is bolted down tight

I also agree, I had the same problem and that fixed it.

Also, check the ring terminals on the battery. Sometimes being corroded it will not make a good enough connection. You'd be surprised at work when an installer of mine could not figure out why he was getting 9v's at the amp and at the battery. He too thought the batter was bad. Maybe it was, but sure as hell helped cleaning the ring terminals.

I'd say, check the terminals first, then check the grounds. If not that, then your alternator is shot. Any chance of a big system, or anything else that could be draining your poweR?

I know people that have had an alternator rebuilds but never really always solve the problem, id say just buy a new one and see where you stand.
