Those that rev beyond 9k, Problems w/ Alternator
So this past Friday I finally got my motor street tuned. Thus far I've replaced an ignitor on Sunday and now (not even a week later) I believe my alternator is about ready to take a **** and die on me. My battery light came on while driving so it's probably only a matter of time now. Any of you guys that rev to 9k and beyond have you've had problems with alternators going out frequently? I'm wondering if the stock alternator can withstand these high revs. If not, is there a place where I can have my alternator rebuilt for higher revs or buy a beefier aftermarket one? Thanks
I think johnzm killed like 3 alternators revving to 10k.
He said the oem alternator seemed to hold up the best.
When he started buying cheaper replacements, they started dropping like flies.....

i only burned my starter and ignitor out. BOth within a week of each other
i revved my motor to 9500rpms.
yeah johnzm killed like 3-4 alternators .

its a horrible thing, ive noticed the aftermarket units, the regulator appearently cannot cope with the amount of energy being produced at high rpms, and they blow out in a smokey sometimes firey death.
at least that wat i think, after watching 3 of them do that in a week
FYI the GSR alternators ouput more amperage than a civicSI or LS

Well, I actually found out what happened...The power wire with the ring terminal that attaches to the alternator broke off (Wire obviously had too much tension on it). However after replacing it with a new ring terminal and a new battery (needed a new one anyhow) my battery indicator light still comes on. Possibly running the alternator without the power wire attatched fried my alternator...Guess I'll find out tonight after class, I think I have a spare alternator laying around in the garage. So most of you have had good experiences with OEM alternators holding up at high revs? Didn't know if anyone out there rebuilds them stronger for higher revs
Obviously running the alternator without the power wire attatched will take its toll...Replaced the alternator tonight at my school's parking lot
Good lighting though, Fortunately everything is running well now, Hopefully this one will last me a little while

the high output alt wont fix the problem .
these are just generators in the sence and the more they spin the more power they make .
the under drive is a good idea for a car that gets beaten alot as it will cut the revs on the alt down ...but can cause problems for cars that spend alot of time in traffic and what not .
i put an oddesy light weight baqtt in my car and ive had problems burnign the terminal and bolt off the rectifer a few times due to the current the batt is sucking in .
just gotta make sure its all tight and it should be fine
