Default cutting out spair tire location bad idea?

if i cut the area out in blue on a 91 crx will the car's stability be messed up? i want to cut that out and put a sheet of aluminum over it and lay a fuel cell on top of that (yellow outline). Of course i will put support bars under the aluminum to hold the fuel cell steady.

Then cover it with 2 sheets of aluminum to hide it and to help with wind drag.

Properly supported with a cage and a cross support there would be no problem.

I plan on doing this soon.

do not do this. that section weighs like 5 lbs. a buddy of mine cut exactly that out to find it isnt worth the weight savings.

unless this is strictly for racing purposes. never drive on the street.

It seems like you would actually add weight. By the time you get a sturdy sheet in and add the supports and welds, it'll probably just weigh more. Seems like a lot of work for a "maybe" outcome.

Its for dirt track racing only. i need to lose as much weight as possible because the car has to be stock. i was thinking of adding the cover anyway to help with drag so i thought it would help if i cut out all that steel.

heh.. well to be honest "drag" issues are usaly no concern with the speed you'll be going Do the math first.. The amount of braceing + sheet metal+weld = twice the amount of weight (If I were you I would have used the Camaro Hobby stock class car or maybe the modified as a dirt track car..[lol there used to be a gremlin that raced where i live.. ran good 2 but yea]) taking out the spare tire area

Wait so you can take out the stock fuel tank and add a fuel cell, and thats not against the rules?

I think it's awesome! I don't understand it when people get all sad and angry about someone cutting up an old rex. Don't get me wrong; I love my CRX, and I know its getting harder and harder to find one in good shape, but when it comes down to it, it's just another 15 year old economy car.

for doing something different. I'd rather see an old beat up CRX racing around in the dirt than it just being sent to the crusher

Well, I kind of understand they have cb7's running and I don't like to see them there but if the car wasn't a dirt track car it would have ended up at the dump.

No, there's a guy running a boat fuel tank in his 91 lude. The rules are kind of blurry in the 4 cyl class as far as what is legal and not. like how im putting a y8 in mine.

better to cut it up and actually use the car for racing like it's meant to be...... unless you would prefer him to put on some ugly *** tailights and 19 inch rims?

HAHA looks like a fun project, its not for tuff trucks is it?

Why not remove the stock fuel tank and add a fuel cell and cover without cutting the spare tire well?

I agree. The Spare tire well looks like it'd be stronger than sheets of Aluminum.
It has those neat almost pleats, which add strength.

If you were to cut it out, I'd use Honeycomb Aluminum, it's fairly expensive, but it's FRICKING STRONG!!!
McMaster-Carr sells that stuff.

Just fab up some bars to bolt the frame rails together. This has proven beneficial with the spare tire well intact. That area of the unibody is behind the rear susension. Maybe brace the frame rail where it meets the rear bumper, to the strut tower on the opposite side. If it was me, I'd probably take these ideas to a custom roll cage shop and see what they say.
