Default retourqing head studs....is it necessary (HELP ASAP)

I just got my motor together. PnP GSR head, Crower valvetrain, ITR valves and cams etc. I used a cometic MLS head gasket and ARP studs, we followed the correct sequence on the studs, but my friend that was helping me did it, and when he left he took his tools with him. ANYWAY, he told me to drive it a day, then retorque the studs. So yesterday i took everything apart again only to find out i don't have the correct socket...i needed a 14 mm 12pt deep well socket. So today i bought one and it still wouldn't work. I'm tempted to say screw it and put everything back together, especially since i'm itching to drive this thing.

cliff notes....ARP studs (cometic HG) were torqued correctly the first time, is it absolutely necessary to retorque?

Others can chime in--but I never heard of retorquing stock headbolts or ARP headstuds on ANY honda!! That is more of an older domestic necessity. I have used ARP headstuds before on a d16--I and just torqued them to what arp recommended (with the included moly lube)--I think it was 60-65 lb/ft...and just left it. No problems.

i want to break something. I just drove across town and bought a deeper deep well 14mm 12pt....still doesn't work.....WHAT SIZE/TYPE am i supposed to use? I'm so frustrated, but now that it's all torn apart i'm kinda wanting to retorque. I might just put it all back together tho.

1/2 12 point deepwell. and re-torqing is a good idea even if just us old f**** do it. I have always gotten atleast 1 stud to tq differant. Do the same pattern you did before and back the nuts off 1/2 turn and re-torque 1 at a time, you do not back them all off at the same time.

i went to autozone, and the only 12pt, deep-well 1/2 socket was in a set of 50....so i then went to all other places in town that i thought would have it....none did. So tomorrow i'll go to Sears....if they're open on Labor day. I think i'll hold the record for the longest time taken to retorque head studs. So far it's 2 days/

drove across town again, got the socket. took less than 5 minutes to retorque, and two of the nuts tightened some more. Now i have to put it all back together......then hello 9,000 rpms.

thanks DonF,

Got it all put back together, and it runs pretty strong...although i'm not sure the cam timing is right. and it smokes and appears to be leaking oil. read here if you want to try to help.
