u can just smog it, its fine, as long as the exact engine code was available in your year civic you will be fine. because smog shops just have a book that they look up your year and look at the engine codes and they will see if your code is listed. thats it

Not sure about cali rules, but I've heard it has to be same year or newer. Not sure if that applies to swapping the exact motor

Yes, the motor needs to be the same year or newer than your car.

So maybe the station won't pay attention at the head date stamp.

If you decide to go to the ref which you don't have to unless your required by a police officer citation. The smog ref will look at the engine code and the VIN # on your car and they will see that it does not match up. Then they will treat it like any B-series engine swap by making sure all the smog equipment, engine year the same, ECU, etc.... is the same or newer.

Now if you don't have to go to the smog ref then most smog techs won't care if it's a D15B as long as it passes the sniffer test and all the smog equipment are there in the first place.

If you're just going to a smog test only station or regular smog test station, I doubt they would know the differences. If they see the SOHC engine instead of a DOHC engine in it that's all they would care about. Now going to a smog ref is another story.
