You are basicaly looking at keeping the camera from flying around and hitting your self or passenger if you have a oooops.A simple strap with buckle type lock same as your helmet.
Most camera mounts come with these. As far as i know there is no actual specs on this type of thing.Just make sure it will not come loose and hit your head.

I just made a camera mount exactly like that. It also bolts to the headrest.

How come you put it on the driver's seat? Seems like an added danger that could easily be avoided by mounting it on the passenger's seat.

As for the strap, try a large dog collar. They're VERY strong, and have a nice plastic clip.

why is it an added danger to have it on the driver's seat? If the camera's loose... does it matter what side it was originally anchored to?

I'm not sure that it really is any worse. Still, it would seem that having that bar behind your head and pointed in your direction if it were to come loose or break would be easily avoided. In a frontal impact, the camera will accelerate on an arch toward the driver's side, with the fulcrum of the arch just behind the driver's right ear. If mounted to the passenger's seat, that arch is directed away from the driver. Again, this is worse case, but an easy fix.

As you mentioned, if the camera comes loose on it's own, it doesn't really matter, but if the camera is knocked loose, that setup could send it toward the driver.

Ironically, or perhaps not, a camera strap as mentioned in the first post would greatly add to the safety of either setup

I second that!

Having sharp metal objects pointing towards your neck is not a comforting feeling

Or you could use PVC pipe that extends all the way across between both seats.
