What will happend if the timing is off?
Let's not get confused cam timing with ignition timing. Yes 1 tooth off in cam timing will cause all kinds of bad driveability problems.
Base ignition timing advanced to 21deg, I've had my GSR advanced to 25deg. I noticed good throttle response, good power throughout the rev range. I did not hear any knock or feel the ECU was retarding timing. I did put it back to 18deg (spec is 16 plus/minus 2) and there was a little decrease in throttle response.
Advancing it too far and bad things can happen. Peak cylinder pressures increase, combustion chamber temps. increases and possible melt down. Also if your car is not equipped with a knock sensor you may not pick up that your car is knocking and could cause damage. Even if your car is equipped with a knock sensor, knock circuit is disabled at high RPM so you could still do damage.
Now if you're on top of everything on your car and you run +premium gas (over 91 octane) than you should advance beyond stock to take advantage of the good gas. Do it on a dyno and know for sure that you're making power

yeah, i had a timing belt change and guys who did my timing didn't do it right. it was at 21degree and then i took it back to get it fixed. it is now at 19 degrees.
if you are leaking oil onto your trans and block, i would say it is most likely your cam plug in the front right hand side of your motor right in front of the distributor. Left hand side of the motor if you are standing there staring at it. Check to see if the oil originates there and post back
i check i that area is dirty but not as dirty as the front of the block and under the tranny. I mean my VIN number is covered with grime. cant see it.
i'll take a better look tomorrow. might be the cam seals who knows.
