Default Lojack? Worth it?

With all of the posts in recent days regarding caRs being stolen, I was thinking about maybe getting Lojack installed.

Anyone know what it costs?

Please don't post if you have it, do yourself a favor and don't advertise.

I'm ONLY interesting in pricing, that's it.

If you have any stories to share, please do. Do you know someone that had their **** stolen and then recovered? Does the story have a happy ending? I'd like to hear about it.

Thanks y'all are teh biz0mb!

PS - Before you talk **** about me being a theif, I've got my **** legit and right here:

Your search for lojack returned 37 results.

BTW that's incluting archived files, title search only (I'm sure there would be more results with am archived/post body search).

Oh, yeah ... used to have "wing"!

Not a single one of those threads had pricing info. I heard it had a monthly fee tied to the cost of the unit plus installation.

Anyone confirm?

Installation was about $600 back in 1997, and no periodic service fee. They did require a "checkup" every year or two to keep the warranty in force, but that was just to ensure that the battery was still good, etc. Keep in mind that only police in certain areas (cities) have Lojack receivers, so coverage is not perfect.

No need to get offensive there, schleprock.

I already went to their site and grabbed their useless .pdf files. They don't have any pricing info on their site and I already snagged the local dealer number.

Thanks for the fore sight to tell me to use google Nostradamus

Whatever happened to that old adage, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?'

haa haa :to the above comments:

i dont have lojack presently but i will give you my personal experience with lojack in the socal area. ive had 4 previous cars installed with it. with all different installers.

they work on commission ( but naturally all lojack installers, agents will say they dont)

the more units they install the more money they make... you will find that it will take about 30-40 minutes for the entire install. and why is this? because the installers are not really concerned with placing the small black box in an area where it can not be reached. this is due to the yearly inspection/tune up..&lt;&lt;&lt; if its in an area that is too hard to get to they can not check it. and why would they, there is no way they will stay there the whole day or even 4 hours placing it in a place where the whole dash will need to be removed to get to it...( how i had it installed myself)

so the box will in no way be placed in a hard to reach area. even though they claim hundreds of places . it will be placed in a are where thiefs are not commonly looking in or at.

the system is pretty basic. negative, positive, antenna, and the reciever.. i would suggest if you do have it installed, that you force them to tell you where the box will be placed before they start work, and what i said was " I TEAR DOWN MY CAR ALL THE TIME AND I DO NOT WANT TO DAMAGE THE DEVICE BY CUTTING A WIRE OR SOMETHING SO I WOULD SUGGEST YOU TELL ME WHERE IT IS" the installer will go through his company policy about i am not able to tell you where the box is installed. just tell him. "im not here to get you fired, i just need to know where it is so i dont damage the product. thats all." more than likely he will tell you where it is atleast the 4 installers did for me with no exchange of money. remember the word commission... they will tell you if you push them.

once you find out where it is. you can place it where you want (not next to metal and make sure you expand the antenna, red wire on "12+ constant, and negative on a ground)... but understand i would charge the box for the next couple of days before you disconnect it. the system can still be traced even if disconnected so dont be afraid of moving it somewhere else your not damaging it...

and when you do your yearly checkup you just need to tell the installer where the box is... the location is written down in your lojack paperwork for the next installer to find it and test it...

if you do move it. just make sure you are able to make it accessible to the installer when you decide to pay for the check up... using double sided tape work in areas when hiding the box aswell.

ive never had any problems with lojack on it working, ive done my own test and they were always able to find it (i wont go into how i had them test it)

my only complaint is their installs.. and when you do it. you will see what i mean...
hope this helps in some way... i would also not rely on any device solely for protection.. layering your security works best......

think of it this way.. you can have any alarm shop install the most expensive and truely the best alarm system in the whole world... but if the actual install is not done in a way to prevent a thief from disabiling it, (moving the fuses to the engine bay, wiring it differently etc) the alarm is useless in all respects.

in other words it takes me more than 5 minutes to start my car.... and yes i rest peacefully during the day and at night.

I was wondering this same exact thing, about what the pricing scheme is. Maybe this thread would do more justice in the Audio / Security / Video section? </TD></TR></TABLE>

i got all my lojacks for $500 out the door... but alas that distributor is no longer in business.... but they range from 400-1,000+

and dont think dealerships will do a better job...... i would suggest having them come to your house...that way you can see how long it takes.... and then wondering why it was so fast....

Sweet!

Thanks for the info bro, you are immensely helpful!

So it has to be wired up, that limits the places I can put it, as it has to have power.

Not near metal? The whole car is ******* metal, where the hell can I put it besides the goddamn dash? Ah, I've got an idear.

Also, Is it possible for you to buy the unit and install it yourself?</TD></TR></TABLE>

i havent looked for an lojack system for so long, but only contracted distributors can sell them and it can only be installed initially by lojack.. after that you can move it. and just let the check up installer know the new location.

yes it has to be wired up.. and you can also just use longer wires so putting it where you want and have it wired up is still possible.. the main problem is making it accessible to the check up ...

and the next to metal is not very important the more important part is making sure you can get the antenna extended to get the signal out and to receive the signal.....and the antenna can be placed anywhere you want.. lets just say my antenna was wrapped and only 4 inches long in the place where mine were installed.. haa haa no wonder some lojack signals are not found!!!!!!!!!!!!

this pricing was couple of months ago.
basic lojack service $599.

early warning lojack service (link to a beeper or your cell if your car is being attempt to get stolen) $999.
there is no service monthly fees. however i believe this service is good for only 5 years. for best pricing and information. purchase is at any honda/acura dealership or other factory auto dealership. price is negotiable.

what was that one lock thing, I think it was called revlock or some thing like that. That one where you have a key that has like sixty pins.
