Default Insurance, tell them about the swap?

So yeah, I'm doing a ZC swap if you didnt know already, and I'm regestering it in 6-8 months. For those of you who have swaps and are insured now, did you tell your insurance agency of your swap? I dont want my car to get jacked and not be reimbursed for the engine, but then I dont wanna get cought with an illigal swap.

I just read this post and remembered that I forgot to pay my insurance this month.

To answer your question, I didn't tell them about my swap, but since they dont know about it, it won't be covered in event of theft or accident.

I didnt tell them about my gsr, and it worked out great. The appraised the car when it was crashed, and I ended up getting 6K for it, and buyback was 125 bux. Thats just my case though.

How did you manage that? I'm not doubting it, I'm just curious how you got 3 times blue book for it.

I am an Insurance agent, and the company is only gonna cover what the car came with if you have comp and coll. Now company's like Progressive and Geico will insure extra stuff, but it is gonna cost you.

yeah tell them about the swap, get the extra coverage. Ryans GSR wouldn't have been appraisable if it was jacked and never found... therefore no extra money if that had happened.

State Farm insurance rocks, all i gotta say, ry didn't have any extra coverage for aftermarket parts.

Tough choice...
On the one hand, you get screwed if the car is stolen and its not covered.
But if you do report the engine swap, the increase in value and basically admiting you are into driving cars fast, the adjusted premiums will screw you.
Me? I opted to get screwed if my car is stolen instead of every six months when premiums are due.
On a car thats 15 years old with a blue book the size of a postage stamp...I opt for liability only (plus uninsured motorist). Even with my swap.

Voodooboy520;

I've got two cars and my 89 with ref'd B18c is my "second" car. When I went to get insurance from AAA I initially didn't plan on getting full coverage due to thinking that they wouldn't cover what's been installed. The guy that was taking the order asked me why and I told him. He stated that AAA would cover it and told me how much more it would be. I don't remember the additional cost for full coverage, but it was real reasonable.

I've taken the car into their office and they photo documented everything, including the referee sticker (showing it's a legal swap).

If the insurer knows what it in your car, then they have to cover it. You have to talk to your agent.

All that said, you are in kind of a catch 22 due to the ZC not being a legal swap.

Ryan; You only had to pay $125 to get your car back? Heck, I drive up there and give you twice that for it.

Wes

Ryan;

Well, I know you live in San Jose, now all I have to do is figure out which door.

I almost hate to ask, but did you ever get the engine through the referee?

Anyways, I'll ask him about it.

I'm going to get pissy here in regards to the wording of the prior post. Mycomments are based on how it is here in California. I have no idea how it would be handled in North Carolina (NC).

A ZC engine isn't illegal by it's self. If you had it sitting in your garage the cops couldn't arrest you or give you a ticket.

A "non-federal" engine engine (like the ZC) in a 4G civic makes the car illegal! You have violated federal smog laws.

It may be that the local governing agency doesn't inforce the law and as such it isn't an issue.

Think about this, here in California you are not required to have a smog check on older cars. That doesn't say that it's legal to modify the smog equipment that was originally installed. It just says that they are not going to check.

Now you may not think this is worth worrying about, but if you insurance company can show that you illegally modified your car, they may not feel they are required to cover it.

So if you go in and tell them you want full coverage because it is worth more than blue book because of the mods, do you have to show them all receipts, etc? Do they take into consideration the work done or just the worth of the parts? Just wondering because it seems like if you don't have receipts, it's worthless. Would be a lot of work for them to look up the price of everything on the car wouldn't it?

doitdub;

If my car gets stolen, there are two ways that I can show to the insurance company what I had.

Some items are covered in that they (the insurance agent) photographed them. Things like the fact that it's a B18c, that it was ref'd, condition of the interior and body, rims, etc.

Then there are items like the quaife differential or koni shocks; I have receipts for all these items.

It's all documentation that has to be done prior to anything happening to the car!
