Honda invented it and got a patent on the system, later on they decided to license it out to those willing to pay, i.e. Toyota.

Toyota isn't the only company with a system similar to Honda's VTEC system. Mitsubishi has it (MIVEC), Nissan (VTC) to name a few.

vvti equals self cam timing adjustment -

Honda found it, others bought it..

Yes I know, but no one had it back in 1988 when the first VTEC B-16 was made by Honda, that's the origin of the technology.

I am pretty sure variable valve timing has been around since the 70's although I dont know who inveneted it but im sure it wasnt Honda. Honda has just marketed it the best and probably advanced the technology the most.

the first toyota vvt only controlled valve timing on the intake cam, but i guess the vvt-i controls lift as well. not sure, i just know the vvt on my 20v 4ag motor is oil controlled and simply advances cam timing at a certain rpm. the 3s has a similar oil controlled cam gear.

vvti uses an oil pressure based system to vary the cam timing. I think it is self varying 15-20 degree's retarded or advanced. Systems like tha tuse inputs from all kinds of sensors. Lots of companies use timing adjustment and call it all kinds of crap like vvt-i, CVVT, etc. It is different from Vtec in that is DOES NOT have an induction (lift) adjustment...just timing. Vtec engages a second cam profile and is an on/off switch....timing adjustment systems vary a single profile in how its applied in relation to TDC and BDC.

If I am not mistaken Ivtec uses a timing maniuplation up to 50 degrees retard or advance as well as a three lobe camshaft to change lift profiles.

Then again, variable valve timing and VTEC are two completely different things.

If I remember correctly, Mercedes invented it in the 20's-30's
