1986 Accord Automatic: Tale of Woe. Driving around I hear the tell-tale clickety-click of failing CV's. Oh well, time to do axles. Check local axle prices (I hate to take CV's apart), find Pep Boys price to be okay (59 bucks each? ... Ya sure ya cant' go cheaper?). Find this site. Do searches on 'axles'. Whoa, FixHondas, it can't be THAT difficult. Grab jacks, wrenches, wife and PB'Laster and head for garage. Oooops, forgot 32mm axle nut socket. Buy new axle nuts. Buy socket. Buy 4-foot length of 1" pipe to extend 1/2" breaker bar length (Lessee here, 4 feet times 100 pounds = 400 foot/pounds - that oughta do it!). Yank hubcaps, re-install lugnuts. Ask wife (nicely) to stand on brakes whilst I stand on breaker bar. Nothing. Apply PB'Laster, liberally. Wait a little while. Son comes out and reminds Mommy that "Hunk-a-matic" is coming on cable. Repeat application of superhuman effort. Nothing. Repeat. Nothing again. Son comes out and says dog ate the Cheetos. We don't have a dog. Wife getting irritated/annoyed/bored ... at this point really can't tell (Wife drives new Jetta). Okay, one last superhuman effort (Yeah hon, this time it's gonna work!) #@)^^!! Broke breaker bar !!! Drive around aimlessly in Accord (w/no front hubcaps - verrrrry cheesy) looking for someone with an impact wrench big enough to remove the axle nuts and dumb enough to try it. No luck, seems the insurance underwriters have all been there before me and warned them about people like me ... I guess I go rent an electric impact wench. Are they (electric impact wrenches, that is) up to it? (Or more to the point, am I up to it?)

 

The axle nuts are keyed in place, i.e. there is a keyway on the axle, the outer ring on the nut is punched into the keyway. Be sure the nut is straighted out. I've never had one that was that hard to remove.

 

I definitely un-deformed them (I think "unstaked" them is the proper term). How did you remove yours? [blush] Gee, maybe we don't know each other that well.
