go underneath the car also and twist the shift linkage at the tranny. You might notice some play in that connection. A little bit of slop at where the linkage meets the tranny translates to a good inch or more of slop at the shifter.

I have the same problem on my 88 CRX. It's so sloppy in 3rd & 5th that it will start to rattle if I'm not holding it. Can anyone that's gone through and fixed the problem shine give some info on what they did? I've heard replacing the shifter bushings helps but isn't where the real problem lies. What about where the shifter meets the shift linkage? Would wear there cause it? And would getting a new shifter like a Neuspeed or B&M fix the problem?

the main problem is that there is a u-joint in the shift linkage that wears, and isn't really replacible.

also, there is a ball that the shifter sits in, that can wear, but that's not as common.

there is a roll pin that goes in there it costs a dollar from honda... any slop down there will be rediculous amount in the shifter so check out your roll pin.. i tried to use a nut and bolt.. MASSIVE slop its not the bushing if its feeling like its in neutral in gear.. its the pin
