Default new to welding

me and my friends bought a $500+ mig welder from menards a year ago and had no idea how to use the damn thing. i forgot the exact model but i know it was similar to the one kids used at school to weld mufflers. i think it was the gauge that we used cause their weld is so much better than ours. need tips on how to prevent bubbles and a good thick weld that will not melt a hole through the pipe like current, speed, guage, etc.
