Default pipe to flange

What are you guys using for filler rod on stainless tube to flange welds? I'm about to start on an all 304 stainless header and wasn't sure if 308 would be to brittle for 16ga tube to the head flange.

For welding 304 to 304 use 308l rod.

For welding 304 to mild or carbon steel use 309

I weld flanges to pipe all day everyday

Yea, I just wasn't sure if anyone used anything different for thin gauge tube to head flanges because of them expanding at different rates

Use 309 filler like mike said. The big part is gonna be your heat control, travel speed and torch angle. Make sure to direct the arc slightly into the thicker piece so the molten pool won't pull over to the thinner tubing. Probably wouldn't weld more than an inch at a time in an attempt to prevent warping.

haha, let me clarify. I just wanted to see if anyone used anything different than 308 for stainless flange to stainless tube because of it being a stress point. I know how to weld and what to use in "normal" applications

i use 308 on fairly thin wall material that holds up to 6000psi. Your application falls in the normal category.
