at-home downpipe mock-up -- jb tack weld?
i am mocking up my new downpipe at home. the only problem is that i dont have a welder or anything to hold the pipes and flanges in place.
so, is it alright to use jb weld to tack the pieces together? then when everything is the way i want it, i can take it to a welder. would the jb weld be a problem for the welder?
or would it be better to just use a sharpy and mark everything and hope that it is accurate enough?
lemme hear what you think. thanks.

i would use the marker and make shure you put atleast 2 marks on things and also beshure you dont rub them off well handeling the pipes

I got this tape from a local welding/fab shop, it's colored like natural aluminum and designed to hold pieces of pipe together for mock-up purposes. I used it on my ****, even though I have a welder it was easier to mock it up with the pipes and give it to my guy, then he gets me a nice clean TIG'ed bead on it without having to grind off my MIG trash.

You Can use regular crape tape to Hold it up. Take it the welder and he can cut away parts of the tape to Tack it in place. Once its all tacked together you can remove all the tape and weld it all up.
I wouldnt use JB weld, Its weak and be hassle to clean up before welding...

I'm doing something similar to you, but i was just planning on putting 3 sharpie marks per tube (make sure one of the marks is darker than the other 2 or you'll forget which way it goes

marks work OK but I always get better results tacking it on the car. Doesn't sound like thats an option for you though, so I guess I would try either that 'welding' tape or duct tape. it's gonna be a bitch transporting that thing without it distorting...man, the price of FI....

I used masking tape and a sharpie to hold together the DP and mark it. I used super glue to hold the piping onto the flange, and marked it with a sharpie too. When I took it in to weld, I had to really scrape and steel brush all of the glue off, so that the weld was not contaminated.
Definately have the guy just tack it together first, so that you can test fit it before he welds up the whole thing. Its a bitch to make a downpipe if you dont have the welder there to tack up as you go. Good luck!

thanks for all the response! here's my plan, i am gonna hold the pipes in place with 3 strips of duct tape taped parallel to the pipes and then also mark 2 places with the sharpy. that way my welder can tack weld where there is no tape and then i can remove the tape and he can weld the rest.

Try to avoid Duct tape, It gets real messy. Specially when it gets hot
Just get some Normal crape tape (Yellow, manilla colored masking tape )
