can i lighten flywheel for sts?
i think i am going to have to put in a new clutch into my prelude before racing this year. since i am taking it all out anyway, can i lighten my flywheel (and balance it with the clutch of course) and still legally run in sts? i couldn't find anything about it on line in the rules, so i am asking before i go and do it.
No you can't and your clutch has to be a standard Honda OEM style clutch or similar aftermarket brand and not in anyway an upgraded one. But I don't know how they could check that during tech??
well, if ur clutch peddal is excessively hard, that could be a hint. if when u rev ur engine and it revs and falls to idle quickly, theres a clue to the flywheel. at a local event, its not so much a big deal as if it were nat'ls. then they'd do what ever they do. i don't think they take ur car appart like runoffs, but...
just so i can make absolutely sure (not that i am doubting you) where does it say that in the rules? is it in the rule book? i haven't checked that out yet, but will soon. i just want to be totally sure. when i lightened my flywheel for the ep crx that i ran last year it was an incredible difference. i loved it. so i want to be 100% sure that i can NOT lighten that flywheel.
lightweight flywheels are allowed in street prepared, not in STS. If you doubt the rules, then go buy a rulebook http://www.scca.org . And its fairly easy to tell by the way the car revs and launches if a 8lb flywheel has been installed. 5-6,000 rpms launches with no wheelspin is a dead giveaway.

At the Nationals, Robert Carpenter (CRX in ES) was protested 3 times for shocks and various other things. His car was still in pieces several months later.
Are CRX's legal in SM, or do you need to have a "real" rear seat in SM like you do STS? If so, SM would be an option, too...

Yep, he had to replace his Koni shocks with off the shelf Tokico Illuminas between the first and second days. He was actually faster on the second day, too.

As for your other question...CRX's can un in the new SM2 not SM.
Crosser, not sure what event Rob was protested for his shocks, but I thought is was for the nationals, and I had heard that protest was lodged by Rick Cone... Thanks for the clarification on the CRX in SM2.
Rick Cone may have been part of it...but Mark Chiles originated both protests. The shock protest was out in Kansas at the Pro Finale that takes place the weekend before Nationals...It was crazy...I was sitting there watching him finish putting the Tokico shocks in the car while sitting in grid after calling a mechanical to give him a couple extra minutes. He finished and went out and crushed everyone in the class. It was beautiful...The engine teardown was after nationals. There was no second day at natinals this year becasue of the Sept 11 events...so that is where your stories were being confused. Robert continues to show how good the CRX's are, even in stock form.

BTW, thanks for sharing the the first-hand account.
