where to buy or rent a cylinder honing tool local?

Wait now i'm reading that it's not needed if the cylinder is in good condition?

I'm puting a used stock piston in with new rings to replace one with cracked ringlands.

Helms says don't hone unless you bore

what if i use the used ring from the used piston? It's from a different motor so would it seal okay?

the hone is to give the cylinder a rough surface for the new ring to wear its own grooves into so it seats properly for lots of miles/rpm's. Not sure if you should hone for used ring but I would say its a safe bet. I think i would

do not reuse rings.

when using new rings you need to hone.

okay they didn't have the ball kind so i got the stone kind... should be okay with very light pressure and lots of lube right?

I would have to say yes. How was removing the pistons? Did you have that tool (can't remember the name) that cut's off the little ridge at the bottom of the cylinder walls? I have seen people just pound them out, but I think that is just stupid.

 

uhh the pistons slide right out the top with the head off

why would you take them out the bottem?

it takes like 1/2 hr to pull the head

Good point. I did mine from the bottom when I replaced my rings and pistons, but my head was fine. I was thinking that you didn't have to remove the head, but then I realised that it would be easier. Your the guy that miss shifted right? I guess you would pull the head anyhow to see if the head is fine.

Yeah, that's it .

 

why would it be stupid to pound them out? i could see if your using a normal hammer but there is a special hammer for tapping in and out pistons. but then again ive never taken a piston out from the bottom.

you cant take the pistons out of the bottom...lol

I think u can if u remove the squiter's or btw wtf do u want to take the pistosn frome the botton THEN HOW THE HELL ARE U GONNA PUT THEM BACK IN ? U NEED A RING COMPRESSOR WICH IT WONT FIT AROUND THE BLOCK ??????? U HAVE TO PULL THE HEAD EITHER WAY

I know. I know. When I rebuilt my engine I took the pistons out from the bottom. Then when it came time to put them back in, my new head had arrived and I removed the old one, put the pistons back in and put the new head on. At the time taking the pistons out from the bottom was easier, because the bottom end was already completely disassembled. I haven't ever removed them from the top, but you still would need a ridge reamer cause the top will have a ridge too.

I am talking about people that have not used a ridge reamer and just pound the piston out, which damages the head of the piston and breaks off the ridge. Either way you would be making more work for yourself by doing it like this.

You shouldn't be using a hammer while removing pistons...

all you need is your hands!

Well not on a stcok 21x xxxkm engine with original internals. My ridge on my engine was ******* huge. The piston rings had deffenetly seated on that poor little D series. Trust me there was no way I was getting the piston rings past the ridge. It was so big that i had to bore it and I could set a penny on the ridge and have it stay. But yeah, if your engine was taken care of, a ridge reamer isn't really needed and the pistons should slide out fairly easy.
