torqing a cam gear to a camshaft
what's the best/simplist way to tighten a cam gear to a camshaft? how do you hold the cam shaft in place so you can tighten the gear bolt without the shaft spinning?
thanks
thanks
There is a tool you can use that you place in between the two gears that locks them to prevent them from turning. Obviously does not work on SOHC engines. Or if you have the cambelt in place you can use a wrench on the pulley bolt to lock the crank and then tighten the bolts on the camgears, that's what I did when installing adjustable gears.
insert a flatblade screwdriver between the cam gears. i dunno how you guys torque the exhaust cam gear though, stupid power steering hose is in the way
If out of head you can use a vise or clamp on the camgear, just remember to protect it with something, like a couple of wood pieces to not damage the teeth.
I can usually do it by installing the timing belt and then having somebody or myself hold the other gear and belt.

that's how i got the stock gear off - used the old timing belt.
ok the motor is on a stand and the cams can be either in or out of the head.
i like the crescent wrench idea. i'll probalby try that when i get off work.
thanks

Use a 1 1/4" Open ended wrench on the VTEC lobe to hold the cam in place.
For BVTEC stock cams do 45lbs
For BVTEC aftermarket do 39lbs.
This is covered by omniman in the 200whp DVD.

thanks, i just so happen to have a wrench that size. i also have ctr cams with aftermarket gears, so 45lbs it is. wish me luck fellas. i put the clay on the pistons last night and torqed the head. once i get these cam gears on the shafts, i'm gonna slap it together, crank it around, and measure the clay!!!! i'm praying that i have enough clearance with the ctr pistons. only 1 way to find out....
