Default what is the difference between a d16y7 and d16y8 engine?

I have a good friend who is wanting a turbo kit for his 2000 civic dx with d16y7...

so far, I only find turbo kits for the d16y8 engine..... and the tech at edelbrock said their kit wouldn't work on a d16y7 engine.... he wouldn't elaborate more....

I didn't realize that there would be problems trying to get a turbo kit for my friend...

does anyone have any recommendations as to if this engine can be easily boosted with a readily available turbo kit?

any problems on the stock engine at 6-7psi of boost with an intercooler if using a walbro 255 in tank pump? save for no detonation and or tuning issues..... (I assume that most of these kits will come with an FMU for fuel enrichment)

Thanks for all the help to an ignorant New-B!!!

Ryno

You're gonna need to get custom charge pipes.

This sounds like a question for Ralph, aka Marauder. If anyone knows, it's him.

The reason why it wouldnt work is because of the pipping and compression i believe. Buy the kit, make your own pipping, sell the pipping and have at it.

Just curious for myself, but what if you are using the y8 intake manifold? Then could you still use the kit?
(not counting any compression issues)

The y8 manifold opens from the side while the y7 manifold opens from the top. Obvious reason the charge pipes that come with the greddy kit for the y8 will not work.

just swap to a Skunk2 96-00 EX manifold with a Type R Tb or a Elbroke SOHC intake manifold with a typr r tb, your best bet

if u want even, do a gsr tb http://www.maxbore.com u can get that real cheap 100 for the port and be type r size's

yea, why run a turbo and not switch to a better intake manifold for next to nothing

I didn't know about the differences between a y7 and y8, that is why I asked what the diffs were..... also, are there any differences in the computer system or basic engine mechanical parts? or is it just an intake difference?

I specialize in turbododge stuff, and I am pretty good at it, but I haven't fully immersed myself in Honda knowledge yet....

as far as using one throttle body versus another, we are really not looking to add or modify more parts than necessary to make one of these turbo kits work, so we would want the cheapest and best throttle body for the job..... whatever would work properly with the stock Y8 manifold and such

Just get an automatic y8 intake manifold and slap that beast on with the turbo!

that's it, just an intake manifold and throttle body? or just the intake?

Compression is not different? or what?
Vtec vs. Non-Vtec?

nothing else?

anyone tell me the compression difference and whether or not a turbo kit for a d16y8 with an FMU will work with this d16y7 engine once I have converted to the y8 intake manifold or modded the piping...

Is the y7 manifold bad, or just different? because if it will make as much power with it, I will just mod the pipe going to it with a proper mandrel bend...

Did anyone PM Marauder for me because I can't do it???

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the D16Y7 and D16Y8 are close to the same CR - somewhere around 9.6:1? I'd definitely look into a D16Y8 intake manifold - with it's much larger plenum - It seems more ideal for your setup. So basically - the turbo manifold will bolt up to both cylinder heads. The only difference is that the piping that comes with the Y8 kit is designed to be used with a side mount throttle body. If I were you - I'd pick up a Y8 manifold, some injectors, scrap the FMU and start researching Uberdata.

My $.02

Y7- 9.4:1 NON VTEC 106hp
Y8- 9.6:1 VTEC 127hp

I have installed a Greddy Y8 kit on my Y7. There won't really be any problems except it will run richer than it needs to because the Emanage is tuned for the Y8 which puts out 20 more hp from the factory and has totally different fuel and ignition curves. I already had the Y8 intake manifold installed so all the pipes bolted right up. Y7 intake manifold flows really well under 4K RPM then drops way off, get a Y8 off ebay.
good luck!

Thanks to both of you for the help!!!

Sounds like it will be a little safe if nothing else with the extra fuel enrichment....

I will get a y8 intake for him and do that then!!!

I really appreciate all the help and opinions and direct knowledge!!!!

Thanks again!!

do I need the throttle body and all from the Y8 or will the Y7 TB fit? I will tune it with my wideband if I need to.... I can put a lower ratio disc on the FMU or bleed it slightly if I need to clean it up some....
We are thinking about the greddy or the TSI kit, what do you think?

what spark plugs do you run and what gap, also, what wires and cap do you recommend for it?

Thanks again for all the help!!!

Either throttle body should work. As far as the manifold swap goes, I'm pretty sure you'll have to do a bit more work than just bolting it on.

There are some decent pictures on this thread.
