Detonation?
Hey guys, im kind of scared that my motors messed up. I just got it together and had it running for like 30 seconds and it seeemed to be running good, but there were these random pop/click noises ( not backfires) that would last for a second or two then go away. it did this two or three times then i just shut it off. any ideas?
it was just ideling on the basemap.. 1000-1500 rpm.. first 30seconds the motor has been running.
Im guessing since its on the basemap that its running pretty rich + maybe too advance ignition timing = preignition?

i dont think ive ever heard of detonation at idle. its probably the basemap... basemaps are slobbering rich all over the rpm range, including idle. you are probably hearing the unburnt fuel being spit out of the motor

Would this give a random knocking noise / not a backfire noise?

this sounds like if you took a ratchet and knocked it against the side of the block... i think.. its started to fade from my memory
Im not sure, i'v never heard "knock". Im just guess that it might be knock because its a popping/ knockish sound from inside. I check my timing belt and everything mechanically is still in time (so its not a valve or anything)...so.. im not sure where else to start

another thing, when i started it the dizzy was just set right in the middle of advanced and retarded ( ihaven't set the ignition timing yet) could this be the problem? too advanced for first start up?

the funny part is, i just went outside and tapped on my block with a ratchet, lol.
if thats how it sounds then i think it may be internal. do you know what your ring gaps are.. what size bore?

another thing, When it was making this noise, it didn't seem to effect the rpm's. They just held right at ~1200
would piston slap be a constant noise or just every now and then?

It could be something in the clutch or tranny area also.
Pull your valve cover just to see if everything looks normal under there.
Piston slap would be constant.

thanks for the help everyone
I checked under the valve cover, everything seems normal. Im going to go through and readjust the valves... just to double check.
Would the position of the distributer effect anything?

Hey, I have a little update... I was just running the car for a while and it started up with the noise and then instatly went away for about a minute, then i shut the car off. Then i came back to it a few hours later, started it up let it run and it made the same noise a few more times, then i shut it off. It does sound like it oculd be coming from the transmission. This is a possibliity because i put in a new clutch when i built the motor. Anyone know where to start now?
*also I cannot get the car into first when its running
