i've searched all over for idle problems, but couldn't find any that fit my problem...

its a 1997 civic ex coupe

i'll be driving along, press in the clutch, the RPM's will fall, "hit" 900 rpms, bounce up to like 1200 or 1400 rpms and then hover there (or rise slightly) until i stop... and then it will eventually settle down to normal...

also, in the morning i will start my car up, and once its warmed up it'll settle down to about 600 rpms, but after a little bit of driving-- i'll notice it'll hover around 1000 rpms

i have new plugs, wires, i seafoamed it about a week ago-- my idle problem has been around since i can remember

 

You may have a vacuum leak.

 

hello, I have a 1997 honda civic HX and I have had the same problem. But I found out that it isan't a problem at all. It is just normal operation, as long as it is not hunting for an idle, or going above 1500 rpm I wouldn't be concerned. A hunting idle is were it will rise and fall consistantly. Up, down, up, down, ect.. Then I would check out your IAC-Idle, Air, Control Valve it is located on the back of your intake and will have an inlet and outlet hose attached to it. It will have anti-freeze running threw it and that will control your idle based on engine temp. The sensor's do have a tendence to plug up and need to be cleaned out, but I only recomend this procedure if it is hunting for an idle. Hope this helped you out.

 

there are hundreds of topics about a bad idle.i had one a few weeks ago and i searched and like 48759879859875 threads came up..it ended up being that my timing was off but check the things that hammer said or the vacum lines

I agree.. there are TONS of threads about this. But you can try your MAP sensor or IAVC. Use some cleaner to spray the grime out.

I have the same problem with my 97 cx hatch.

the threads you are posting to help this guy are threads that concern surging, which is really not the case here. After warming up my car, it's at 800 (should lossen idle screw in back of throttle body to lower it) at idle. The thing is that when I'm driving and I press the cluch and put it in neutral, it goes at 800 (normal) but it jumps right back at 1200 or more and stays there until I completly stop the car (not in motion). there are times that it will rev at 1500 even if i'm stopped. The thing I do to stop that is by pushing the acceletor and reving it up to 6000, after that it's back to normal.

I've tried a bunch of things, the same as stallion but nothing works. But one thing helped me for sometime. I lossen the accelerator cable a bit and it didn't do it for about 4 month but after that the problem came back.

Hope you find the trouble cause i'm getting fed up with this one

 

bring it to a shop! then you can make a thread about how to fix the problem lol

 

Yeah it would be simple like that but it's just that i'm not rich. I try to do it but my own to save a few bucks but if you wanna pay to fix my problem well I have no problem with that!

 

thanks guys-- i think i'll just go ahead and use TB cleaner and clean out my IACV and see if that works...

 

i would have to probly agree with _ben_ check all your vacum lines.
