Default A word of advice

i have been coming around this site now for a few months , a lot of people here have earned my respect for their knowledge and the willingness to help others some go out of their way to post up pictures to all of you great job..
Anyho my main reason here is to help people save some money while fixing their cars and show a way of doing the job properly and give some sounds advices which brings me to write this post and i hope no one will be offended but i have noticed that some people here dont have a damn clue of what they are talking about, they just throw something in to have their say to those people i say ..if you are not sure of what it takes to fix a problem correctly it is ok to say you are not sure other people will come along who can help the individual with correct sound advice and there are a lot of those here ...
.To the people that need help a word of advice do not jump the gun on the first respond especially if it involves spending money to buy parts i know you are in a hurry to fix your car and i am not saying the first advice it is not the correct suggestion but there are a lot of people here who are willing to help so listen to a few more suggestions ,,,,,,
the reason i say this is because today i read a post with a guy that at stops the brake pedal would go to floor , someone adviced him that it is a bad booster the guy was ,, or did already go to buy and replace a brake booster well that is a waste of money and time most of us know what the real fix for that is ..and that is just one example i have read quite a few off the wall suggestions
why am i writing this ??? i hate to see people waste money and do extra work for no reason ......

its the internet. if you take the first word of advice you hear, then your an idiot. I really only listen to the people i have come to trust, or the certified techs. this has no place to be in this forum, im sorry, we know you have good intentions.

I have found that it is that way in pretty much any forum that you go on these days. I have a few friends with different rides from Subaru's to Scions there are idiots on all of those forums as well. Its not just a Honda-tech thing.

Actually Honda-Tech has less morons than most of the other forums that I have been to in the past.

And keep up the good work of giving people valuable advice. We need more people like you on Honda-Tech and any other forum out there as well

A couple more things...

Sometimes I have to guess what you really want to know. If I know you'll try DIY repair I'll answer one way. If you just want 'knowledge' but you're gonna go to a shop, I'll answer another way. If you're trying to decide whether to try DIY or not, just say that.

It's always important to know details about the car. I'll remember lots of people's screen names, but I'm just too lazy to keep track of what car you own & what mods you have. I don't want to waste time writing a response for something, then you say back: 'It can't be that, cause I've got a H22 swap with a turbo & ...'

If you have no electrical skills or tools, say that too. I'll tell someone to check continuity on some wiring, then 10 posts later it becomes clear he doesn't own a multi-meter. That's like explaining how to adjust valve lash & finding out the only tools he owns are a pliers & hammer.

(Hey lime... I used paragraphs! Are you happy?)

Desert Honda, you are a good guy and very informative, and i read nearly every post you and a few others in this accord section put up because you always have excellent information posted up.

Sometimes i wonder what people are talking about because im obviously not as mechanically savvy as you guys but i always make sure i ask like 20 times before i get to doing something! But yea, thanks all you informative guys!

everyone has valid points.

In the time I've been on H-T I've seen other threads like this, not only in this forum but in others as well. Everyone has the same arguements. People posting hearsay but passing it on as fact, misinformation, lack of details, not searching, blah blah.

I agree, it would be nice if people only posted facts, were detailed in there descriptions and questions, and all that. But it is a public forum and new people arrive all the time. Some of them good ones but some are also bad ones.

The people that actually spend some time here reading and that will see who knows their stuff and whos talking out their ***. Don't just take someones word for it because your in a hurry, make sure you get other opinions from people you feel you can trust. Nothing sucks more than replacing something just to have it not work and be out the money and time it took you.

to those who give a helping hand when needed and to those who are willing to learn.

Yes that's why you shouldn't believe everything you read or see for that matter.

When a question is framed in a clear, concise manner, that also helps. Consider these two examples (not actual posts):

Yo wat up! Mi car been shizzen at da lights n da bReaks done woks two good wat shoodz i do?

vs.

Hi, I have a ’98 Accord LX 4 cylinder. When I press down on the brakes at stop lights after the engine has been running for more than 10 minutes or so, they seem real soft and the brakes go to the floor. Any ideas on what the problem might be? If it’s simple I’ll do the work myself, if not I’d like to know what it might be so I’m not completely at the mercy of the mechanic.

The first one is a little extreme, but seriously it’s not too far off of some of the posts I’ve read here. And yes, I agree, if you don’t know what you’re talking about you can still give your opinion, but be sure to add that this is a guess by you and you are not completely sure on what the problem is. Personally I try to only post in threads where it’s something I’m sure of.

Of course, deserthonda, jimblake, and a few others out there, you really are recognized as knowing what the hell you’re talking about and your advice really is invaluable, keep up the good work!

I usually try to steer them toward diagnosing their problems: Have you checked the ______? Does it_____ when you______. I dont know how many times i've posed: What trouble code does it have stored?

Sometimes it seems like everyone just wants to know what is the next most likely part to cure their affliction.Throwing parts at a problem can get real expensive real fast. But what can you do? Asking them questions to try and narrow down the problem doesn't seem to get their attention.

This is a good thread to see how people feel about the accord forum and H-T in general, but it is not really supposed to be in here unless it has been cleared by the forum mod, or lack there of. However, I do feel that far too many people just respond just so they can see their name there. I believe that when I post something it should have some helpful info or at least a wity retort to an asinine question. People may not like what I have to say a lot of times but that is because I don't sugar coat things and I cannot stand people that are full of ****. /rant.

What's funny though is the people that actually just go on a whim and do the first things people tell them to are usually the same people you could tell them that they needed to change their blinker fluid and they would be busy looking for the resevior....

The problem is theres a bunch of (and excuse the brashness, but for lack of better terms) pure ******* idiots on this website. There are people that WANT to be automotive savy but just dont have a ******* clue. There are people that want to read as much as they possibly can so they can impress their little rice boy friends with their knowledge on one subject or another that they read on here (even if the information is wrong).

Case in point, i had a guy come to me at a gas station, and he had a CL Type-S (black one) same year as mine...we started talking and he apparently comes here to read threads. He was telling about the engine, talking about modifications he planned to do, and about halfway through the guy's conversation with myself, i realized that he seriously was one of those influential guys that just didnt have a ******* clue...whether it was his comment about our cars have one of the highest powered DOHC 4cyls that honda makes (lol) or his comment about his stock "Variable Sport Controller" (going on to explain how he can really feel a difference in power when it is off and on...and for those that dont know, the CL-S is equipped with a button that says "VSC" on it...which means "Vehicle Stability Control", but according to my new found gas station friend, was some sort of eternal source of boost when you turned it off...or as he thought on)

...at any rate...people just need to learn for themselves how to filter through the bullshit to get the meat of what this site offers. If they can do that, they'll find themselves with a near endless amount of legitimate and good honda knowledge and help. Otherwise they'll be pushing their VSC button expecting KIT to come on and give some kind of turbo boost.

I would like to know if Honda Tech offers some type of avatar for TRUE certified techs so we know that the person replying REALLY knows their stuff.....

I was "away" from H-T for quite awhile and I don't really remember/know who does know their stuff. (No offense to anyone)
