I've slammed on my brakes to avoid an accident without depressing the clutch pedal and it just killed the engine not the tranny. That's weird your's busted up. Maybe there's a nother reason?

Similar to stalling in first on start up (engaging the clutch with out sufficient throttle)...

This happened to me, in a higher gear (forget which) the engine didn't stall it just felt like it bounced off the rev limiter for a second before I caught it. Should be ok I think, although I wouldn't make a habit of it.

when you let go of the brakes, it should automatically turn on if your still in gear.

There is an important exception to the no damage thing. If you spin the car and don't put the clutch in you can fry stuff big time from suddenly reversing the direction of travel. So, "in a spin, both feet in."

Whatever, power through it!!!!
More gas!
(I wouldn't really recommend that, but have done it in autocross to avoid flat-spotting.)
