True..

code 17 kills vtec..

the car needs to know its going at least 19 MPH for vtec to engage

fix your vss and you might get vtec

VTEC needs 3 things in order to activate and speed is one of them. Having a broken speed cable can cause it not to work. Replace the cable and see if that works. Make sure your oil is topped off also. Let me know if this helps.

Have you looked to see that the VSS is plugged in all the way into the tranny?

"No VSS= No vtec... because the car has to know if its moving..."

im getting a VSS code and no vtec, but i have the Vtec speed check disabled. somtimes vtec works and other times it will not, with one kinda chip, it cuts out at 6400k with the other chip it will rev all the way, both chips are a 50% chance of vtec engauging. my Vtak fluid and blinker fluid are full. go figure?

just take your cluster out and unhook the cable then drive slow and see if it spins, if not then check the tranny side.
