Help! Engine Noise (LS/VTEC)... video included
Hey guys,
I dont post much since search usually solves everything... but I am trying to help a coworker out with his ls/vtec he recently had built and I'd apprecate your help on this one.
This thing was built by someone from this board, they were paid alot of money and now they've disappeared and the car is screwed. We're trying to get this thing running since right now the car is pretty much undriveable and it also sounds pretty bad...
I have included a vid I made with my phone and I know the audio isnt the greatest but if you turn the sound down it's more noticeable... there is a screeching and loud clattering sound that it's making, almost like it's running dry. We made sure that there's enough oil and coolant in there...
I'm planning to do a compression test, pull the valve cover and drop the oil pan and look around for any shavings, i've searched and found that there have been other people with similar problems and it ended up being a spun rod bearing(crap!)...
I just want another opinion on this before I move ahead... any additional suggestions would be great. the last thing this thing had done was a timing belt and an ecu swap. The screeching sound is new, previously it just sounded almost like there was a loose shaft in the motor, like loud clapping...
motor specs: B16 head, ITR pistons/? Rods... i'll try and get more details up soon.

turn the sound down a bit and right click save as please...

im not no pro but it does sound like a rod bering but more then one my friend has a dsm and he spun all 4 main bering not exactly the same sound but its pretty close
damn, all 4? not that it makes much of a difference in the long run, if it's 1 or 4 the fix is the same...
How many people actually get this type of a problem 'repaired'? I figure if it's got a spun bearing then the solution is just going to be to find a shortblock for it... is there a cheaper alternative? thanks in advance..

Since it is an ls/vtec, maybe the wrong head gasket was used and you are getting no oil to the top of the cylinder head and rockers, etc. I've messed with Hondas for years and never heard a noise like that. Check under the valve cover for oil or lack of oil.
who built ur motor? i had the same sound and thought it was my valves. ending up being my piston skirt banging against teh cylinder walls.
i wouldn't start that anymore it sounds like either valve contact or that it has a really really bad injector miss but i doubt it i would go with vlvetrain noise or piston to valve contact **** sound though so i am not sure

hard to tell:
may be valvetrain, maybe not.
if it is a rod= let the car run and pull one spark plug wire at a time to see if the noise goes away. if the noise goes away than possibly a rod bearing on that cylinder.
did you flood the motor by chance? if so than you could've washed the cylinders=pistons toasted.
only way to know for sure is to dissassemble it.

what the hell do you mean by this. enlighten me.

thats how i knew my pistons were toast..had to dissassemble.

We were finally able to get the car to my garage, I'm going to drop the oil pan and pulling the valve cover so I can find out what's going on with this thing... i'll have pictures up tomorrow morning.
The block had an ITR oil pump put in it... could this cause any kind of a problem? I've heard of people using this pump without any problems... anyone have any issues with it?
Thanks for the replies so far!

I think we found the problem... pretty interesting/scary. Here's a pic of what we found when we pulled the valve cover.

This the exhaust side... the nuts somehow came off? I dont know how it could happen but I guess if they were loose enough... One of the nuts we found in the head but the other we could not find... we suspect this is the problem, how bad could this be?
what's the worse case scenario in this situation? could the nut somehow fallen in an oil passage and caused damage? otherwise, would this be the cause of the tapping? valves tapping against the piston? any advice is appreciated.
thanks in advance

Could not find the nut in the oil pan but I did find some shavings... but just from looking at the block there doesnt appear to be an obvious spun a bearing? I've seen spun rod bearings before and they're usually pretty obvious... but I cant recognize any obvious damage...
could these shavings have come from somewhere else? the head? I'm a little baffled since the block/rods dont look torn up. any help would be appreciated...

That nut had to go sumwhere.... I personally wouldn't just leave it floating around. check all your oil galleries and make sure its not stuck in one of them. If its not. i dont know what to tell you. good luck man
suck! i remember what yours looked like... I guess it's confirmed, bearings... I'm going to see what this guy wants to do then decide if its going to get rebuilt or just swapped for another motor...
the motor was built by "This one" not too long ago, but he's nowhere to be found now...
hopefully this will help someone else with a similar problem.
thanks for the replies!

these pics dont look good you may need to tear the motor apart ( that sucks)replace the bearings, turn the crank, all that good **** and of course when the entire motors apart it will be interesting to find out where you find the nut..
Just to update, it was the number 4 rod that spun the bearing... scored the crank, we're going to be working towards rebuilding in the coming weeks. Thanks for the help...
